Sainz herdenkt Mateschitz: "Zonder hem had ik nooit de Formule 1 bereikt"

Het overlijden van Red Bull-eigenaar Dietrich Mateschitz schokte afgelopen weekend de Formule 1-wereld. De Oostenrijker heeft een belangrijke rol gespeelde bij de loopbanen van veel coureurs. Ook Carlos Sainz is Mateschitz dankbaar en de Spanjaard denkt zelfs dat hij zonder Mateschitz de Formule 1 nooit had bereikt.

Sainz is anno 2022 een Ferrari-coureur maar in zijn weg naar de top werd hij gesteund door Red Bull. De Spanjaard was onderdeel van het juniorenprogramma en debuteerde in 2015 in de koningsklasse van de autosport voor het team van Toro Rosso. Via Renault en McLaren belandde Sainz uiteindelijk bij het team van Ferrari.

Sainz is zich echter bewust van de kansen die men hem bij Red Bull schonk. De Spaanse Ferrari-coureur stond dan ook stil bij het overlijden van Mateschitz in gesprek met de media-afdeling van de Formule 1: "Ik wil heel erg gaan mijn condoleances sturen naar zijn familie en ook naar de gehele Red Bull-familie. Ik kende Dietrich nogal goed en ik voelde mij vroeger ook gesteund door zijn support. Ik had de Formule 1 echt nooit kunnen bereiken zonder zijn steun."
