Perez dacht mee te strijden voor de titel: "Voelde mij op mijn gemak"

Sergio Perez rijdt dit weekend zijn thuisrace. De Red Bull Racing-coureur hoopt op het circuit in Mexico-Stad zijn landgenoten te kunnen verwennen met een goede resultaat. De wereldtitel is inmiddels al vergeven aan zijn teamgenoot Max Verstappen maar Perez had eerder dit seizoen het gevoel dat hij echt kon meedoen in de titelstrijd.

Perez begon zeer sterk aan het seizoen en hij kon Verstappen regelmatig zeer goed bijhouden. In de verregende Grand Prix van Monaco kon Perez zelfs het gevecht aan gaan met zijn teamgenoot en de Ferrari's. Hij schreef de Grand Prix op het iconische stratencircuit op zijn naam en men dacht dat Perez zich nu officieel had gemeld in het kampioensduel. De titel werd echter op geen enkel moment als realistisch gezien.

Titelstrijd

Perez zelf geeft eerlijk toe dat hij zelf in eerste instantie ook dacht aan de strijd om de wereldtitel. De Mexicaan laat in gesprek met GP Racing weten dat hij dacht dat hij de strijd aan kon gaan: "Absoluut, ik voelde mij redelijk op mijn gemak. Ik was consistent een van de snelste coureurs tijdens het gehele weekend. Op dat moment voelde het allemaal heel erg natuurlijk, ik had zeker het gevoel dat ik meestreed."

Updates

Na de Grand Prix van Monaco vielen de resultaten van Perez steeds vaker tegen. Red Bull introduceerde een aantal updates die meer in het voordeel waren van Verstappen. Perez is zich daar ook van bewust maar volgens hem hoort het erbij dat hij zich minder comfortabel ging voelen in de RB18: "Het is denk ik gewoon hoe dingen soms lopen. Soms zijn er updates die je helpen soms zijn er updates waardoor je je niet op je gemak voelt. Dat hoort bij de sport, je verandert steeds."

Hij kan altijd nog scorebordjournalist worden na z'n carrière. Tot Monaco was Max, als hij niet uitviel, voor Perez geëindigd. En daarna reed hij hem helemaal kapot.

De auto werd sneller dus de betere coureur kon er meer uithalen, de auto had onderstuur wat Perez meer lag, maar een "puntige" auto is sneller

  De Renault van 2005 en 2006 was ook mega erg op onderstuur afgesteld, precies zoals Alonso ermee wilde omgaan. En we weten allemaal hoe goed die Renault was in die jaren. Dat een puntige auto sneller is, is daarom ook onzin. Het gaat om het totale pakket.

  Zoek er eens op zou ik zeggen, een goede coureur kan met een auto met een goede voorkant echt sneller gaan dan met een onderstuurde en het is in algemene zin ook sneller, Schumacher kon daar ook fantastisch mee rijden

  Dat is het verschil petertje. Er zijn mensen waaronder ik zelf die weten wat racen is en het ook zelf gedaan hebben. Die hoeven niet te Googlen om een bijdrage te leveren.

Off-topic alonso heeft P7 terug na protest
De stewards hebben het protest van Alpine tegen het protest van Haas ontvankelijk verklaard. Zij hebben bovendien direct de tijdstraf die Fernando Alonso in Austin kreeg teruggedraaid. De Spanjaard krijgt daardoor zijn zevende plek in de Grand Prix van de Verenigde Staten weer terug.
