Szafnauer blij na terugdraaien tijdstraf Alonso: "Dit is gerechtigheid"

Fernando Alonso had al voor het Mexicaanse Grand Prix-weekend de nodige WK-punten gescoord. De straf van de Spanjaard uit de Amerikaanse Grand Prix was namelijk teruggedraaid. Volgens Alpine-teambaas Otmar Szafnauer was dit het enige juist besluit en is de beslissing van de stewards niets meer dan gerechtigheid.

Alonso kwam na een bizarre race als zevende over de streep in Austin. Na een protest van Haas over een loszittende spiegel kreeg hij echter alsnog een straf. Hij viel ver terug in de einduitslag en Alpine ging in protest om de straf van hun stercoureur recht te trekken. Na lang juridisch gesteggel kreeg Alonso zijn zevende plaats terug en kon hij de focus weerleggen naar Mexico.

Gerechtigheid

Alonso's teambaas Otmar Szafnauer was eveneens blij met de beslissing van de stewards. De Alpine-teambaas reageerde nogal duidelijk bij Motorsport.com: "Ik denk dat we het resultaat hebben gekregen wat de sport verdiende. Dit is gerechtigheid, maar ik ben natuurlijk bevooroordeeld omdat ik werk voor dit team. Het protest werd te laat ingediend en had daarom nooit behandeld mogen worden. Dat was ons hele argument. Ik denk dat de FIA dat nu wel erkent en dat ze uiteindelijk het juiste besluit hebben genomen."

Afwijkingen

Dat de beslissing van de stewards over de zaak zo lang duurde zorgde voor de nodige vragen. Alpine kreeg immers pas gelijk na een right to review op donderdagavond. Szafnauer en zijn manschappen hebben namelijk het regelboek doorgespit om tot de oplossing te komen: "Er zijn wat afwijkingen. Toen we de tijd namen om naar de regels te kijken en ze worden toegepast, toen werd uiteindelijk de juiste beslissing genomen."
