Perez had lastige kwalificatie: "Hadden last van een elektronisch probleem"

Sergio Perez was de man waar de meeste uitdaging naar uitging in Mexico. De thuisrijder liet de aanwezige fans juichen maar kwam uiteindelijk niet verder dan de vierde plaats. Perez had vanzelfsprekend op meer gehoopt maar de snelheid was simpelweg niet aanwezig, hij start wel vanaf de tweede startrij.

Perez deed er alles aan om het publiek rondom het Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez op de banken te krijgen. De Mexicaanse Red Bull Racing-coureur gaf overduidelijk alles maar uiteindelijk waren teamgenoot Max Verstappen en de Mercedessen van Lewis Hamilton en George Russell sneller. Perez baalde na afloop als een stekker.

Elektronische problemen

Perez wilde de degens kruisen met de concurrentie van Ferrari en Mercedes. De Red Bull van Perez werkte niet geheel naar behoren en hij legde het uit bij Sky Sports: "Het was enorm jammer. We hadden tijdens de kwalificatie last van een elektronisch probleem. We hadden ook moeite met de DRS en het was hier wel belangrijk dat we ervoor zorgden dat alles naar behoren werkten."

Blind

Perez werkte een andere strategie af in de kwalificatie, zo reed hij zijn tweede run in de tweede kwalificatiesessie in zijn eentje. Maar achteraf bleek dat er nogal veel problemen waren bij Perez: "Ik was eigen blind tijdens de kwalificatie. Ik had geen referentietijd, geen informatie over de rembalans en geen informatie over de rondetijden. Het was gewoon een zooitje. Als ik terugkijk lag ik er bijna uit in Q1 en Q2. Dus p4 is niet het einde van de wereld."

@RH, onzin. Dit was geen excuus. Kon je op de onboard beelden zien en de rest was tijdens de kwali al te horen van de commentator.

Het zat hem niet mee, want hij had op de eerste startrij kunnen staan.

More Perez's issues :

1) No laptime reference on dash
2) No DRS tone (so he had to manually decide when to engage it)
3) No brake bias readout (so he had couldn't adjust during the lap and didn't know where he was on it)

He could have definitely locked out the front row with Max without the car issues.
