Bottas verrrast met P6 en split Ferrari's : ''We hebben een goede kwalificatie gehad''

Op de zesde startpositie voor zondag staat verrassend Valterri Bottas met zijn Alfa Romeo. De Fin splitte beide Ferrari's tijdens de kwalificatie voor de Grand Prix van Mexico. De tienvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar was na afloop van de sessie zeer tevreden en verklaarde deze topprestatie.

''We hebben een hele goede kwalificatie gehad, bovenop een weekend waarin we constant in de top tien hebben gestaan'', begon Bottas op de officiële website van Alfa Romeo. ''Het is een goed resultaat voor zondag en ik ben persoonlijk blij dat ik aan het einde van Q3 de beste ronde van het hele weekend heb gereden als het er toe deed.''

Bottas behaalde in de drie vrije trainigen een zevende, achtste en negende tijd. Doorgaan naar Q3 zat dus deels al in de lijn der verwachting. ''De auto was vanaf het begin goed, we hoefden alleen maar de afstelling te verfijnen om nog meer prestaties te verkrijgen. De lay-out van de baan hielp wel, met langzame bochten die echt goed voor ons werken.''

Alfa Romeo is in een harde strijd verwikkeld met AlphaTauri, Aston Martin en Haas F1 om de zesde plek bij de constructeurs. Voor Bottas en zijn team een perfecte gelegenheid om toe te slaan vanaf de zesde startplaats ''Ik ben optimistisch voor zondag. We hebben punten nodig voor onze strijd in het kampioenschap en we bevinden ons in een uitstekende positie om een goed gevecht te hebben. Het is F1, dus alles kan gebeuren, maar we staan bovenaan en dat is waar het om gaat."

Bottas is gewoon een snelle coureur, maar is in directe gevechten matig. Maar op pure snelheid kan hij met de beste meekomen. Dat was bij Williams zo, was bij Mercedes zo en is bij Alfa zou. Je denigrerende opmerking snap ik dan ook niet.

Ze waren in het begin paar races goed en nu pas weer een race, nou nou wat is die goed.

  Wat met name teleurstellend is, is Zhou. Als Bottas echt zijn dag heeft blijft er niets van Zhou over. Die heeft het talent niet en ik zie liever iemand als Pourchaire in die auto.

  Bottas kan inderdaad soms heel snel zijn, dat liet hij ook bij Mercedes zien, maar vervolgens had hij ook hele slechte weekenden. Een coureur die snel is als alles klopt, maar niet constant genoeg om tot de top te horen.

Ijle lucht, daardoor ook minder last van aerodynamische inefficiëntie. Zie je ook bij Mercedes en zag je vorige jaren bij Res Bull. In Mexico telt een goede motor en een auto met goed mechanische grip. Doe daar een snelle coureur bij en een top 10 is hier dan heel reëel. Bottas heeft het goed gedaan, chapeau.
