Alonso trots op vijfde plaats: "Enorm goede race"

Fernando Alonso revancheerde zich gisteren in de Braziliaanse Grand Prix na een mislukte sprint. De Spanjaard kwam op het circuit van Interlagos als vijfde over de streep na een fikse inhaalrace. Na afloop was hij zeer in zijn sas met het resultaat en kon hij weer lachen, tevens stak ook nog de hand in eigen boezem.

Alonso kende een zeer frustrerende zaterdag in Brazilië. Op het circuit in de stad Sao Paulo clashte hij in de openingsfase twee keer met zijn teamgenoot Esteban Ocon. Hij viel ver terug en werd door de stewards als schuldige aangewezen. In de race draaide hij de zaakjes om en reed hij een extreem sterke race.

Andere strategie

Na afloop van de race reageerde Alonso zeer opgelucht. De Spaanse tweevoudig wereldkampioen was blij met zijn race en sprak zich uit bij Sky Sports: "Het was een enorm goede race. We hadden de pace, we deden er dus alle aan om in de schone lucht terecht te komen. We kozen voor een alternatieve strategie, deze was anders dan die van de meeste andere coureurs. De laatste Safety Car gooide alles weer door elkaar en door mijn nieuwere banden kon ik vechten met Charles en Checo."

McLaren

De vijfde plaats van Alonso kwam als een welkom cadeautje voor Alpine. Het team had het lastig na de clash van Alonso en Ocon op zaterdag. De concurrentie van McLaren kende een minder weekend en dat zag Alonso ook: "Allebei de McLarens vielen uit en dat is goed voor het team. Dit zijn veel punten. Dit gaan we meenemen en hopelijk gaat het in Abu Dhabi ook goed."

De mokerslag is uitgedeeld naar McLaren. Geheel verdiend, Alpine had een zeer goede race.
McLaren was ook verdiend, vind Ricciardo zijn actie typerend voor zijn afgelopen twee seizoenen en ook Norris verdiende gisteren niet meer naar het toucheren met Leclerc.

Tijdens en na de sprint had Alonso een beetje zijn eigen glazen ingegooid, maar de race zelf was hij weer typisch Alonso.
