Brundle steekt loftrompet over Verstappen en Red Bull: "Immense prestatie"

Max Verstappen heeft een zeer succesvol seizoen achter de rug. De Nederlandse coureur, die uitkomt voor het team Red Bull Racing, werd dit jaar op overtuigende wijze voor de tweede keer Formule 1-wereldkampioen. Op weg naar die tweede titel verbrak Verstappen meerdere, bijzondere records. Voormalig Formule 1-coureur Martin Brundle, tegenwoordig commentator en analist, was zeer onder de indruk van Verstappens prestaties.

Met vijftien zeges uit tweeëntwintig deelnames stond er dit jaar geen maat op Verstappen, die zich al tijdens de achttiende krachtmeting van het jaar wist te verzekeren van de rijderstitel. Dankzij het succes van haar Nederlandse superster mocht Red Bull Racing zich een wedstrijd later eveneens tot wereldkampioen kronen. In zijn tweede kampioensjaar verbrak Verstappen meerdere records: zo vestigde hij het hoogste aantal overwinningen in één seizoen met dat getal vijftien en scoorde hij het hoogste aantal WK-punten (454) in één jaar.

Brundle, die in zijn actieve raceloopbaan meerdere podiumplaatsen scoorde en daarnaast de 24 uur van Le Mans (1990) op zijn naam schreef. steekt de loftrompet over Verstappen. De commentator van het Britse Sky Sports, een medium wat kortgeleden nog kortstondig door Verstappen werd geboycot, schrijft in zijn online column het volgende: "Het was een dominant seizoen voor Max en Red Bull. Qua punten finishte Max bijna vijf zeges voor op Charles Leclerc, Red Bull won veel meer dan Ferrari. De poles en zeges werden veroverd dankzij slimme strategieën, snelle pitstops en een betere betrouwbaarheid. We moeten de mensen op het circuit en in de fabriek van Red Bull feliciteren met deze prestatie, dit was echt immens."

Omdat Verstappens teamgenoot Sérgio Pérez ook twee wedstrijden wist te winnen, is het seizoensaantal van Red Bull Racing op zeventien overwinningen uitgekomen. Dat is niet het hoogste aantal zeges voor een team. Mercedes wist dankzij Lewis Hamilton en Nico Rosberg namelijk liefst negentien van de één-en-twintig races in het jaar 2016 te winnen. Verstappen bleek destijds, samen met toenmalig teammaat Daniel Ricciardo, de enige persoon die het onverslaanbare zilverpijlenduo van het bovenste podiumtreetje wist te houden.
