Wolff: 'Lopen meerdere maanden achter' op Red Bull en Ferrari

Mercedes-teammanager Toto Wolff meent dat zijn team ‘meerdere maanden’ op concurrenten Red Bull en Ferrari achterloopt wat betreft het gevecht om de ontwikkeling van de nieuwste generatie Formule 1-auto. Mercedes finishte als derde in het constructeurskampioenschap; de Duitsers kenden een slecht eerste seizoenshelft, maar leken in het tweede deel wat competitiever te worden. Wolff laat weten tevreden te zijn met onder andere een goed resultaat bij de Grand Prix van Brazilië, maar dat zijn team niet om werk verloren is wat betreft het herstel richting de top.

Het team van Mercedes kende een moeilijke start van 2022. Met de introductie van een nieuwe generatie Formule 1-auto aanstaande borrelde er voor de teams in de koningsklasse een uniek probleem op: porpoising. Wat betreft de bekende top drie van de Formule 1 was het fenomeen voornamelijk een probleem voor Mercedes. Terwijl Ferrari en Red Bull competitief aan elkaar waren, moest Mercedes veelal genoegen nemen met een achtervolgingspositie. Diens teambaas Toto Wolff kijkt terug naar het afgelopen seizoen.

"Op het gebied van auto-ontwikkeling hebben we meerdere maanden verloren. We moesten het porpoisen oplossen voordat we performance aan onze auto konden toevoegen", begint Wolff. "Wanneer we aerodynamische upgrades aan onze W13 toevoegden, konden onze coureurs het verschil in positieve zin niet eens merken. De auto werd minder betrouwbaar en het stuiteren werd erger. Het zal ongetwijfeld een flinke taak zijn om de verloren zes maanden in performance weer terug te krijgen."

Of Mercedes gedurende de winter de weg naar boven weet te vinden, is nog maar de vraag. Omdat concurrent Red Bull het constructeurskampioenschap heeft gewonnen zal het team van de energiedrankjesgigant minder tijd in de windtunnel krijgen om haar auto te ontwikkelen dan haar concurrenten. Ook heeft Red Bull een straf gekregen vanwege de overschrijving van het budgetplafond in 2021 waardoor het team nog eens 10% minder tijd heeft om haar aeroconcepten te testen. Een combinatie van bovengenoemde factoren zou kunnen betekenen dat het gevecht in 2023 weer tussen drie teams zal gaan.

Eerste is dat Ferrari blijkbaar de motor niet vol open kon zetten.
Tweede is dat Red Bull door de sprint race de setup niet voor elkaar had voor race trim.

  Als mer het concept zou kunnen overnemen dan moet je dat ook niet willen, immers rbr ontwikkelt verder en je wilt beter worden dan je concurrent. Dan moet je iets beters creëren

Ach.... Toto heeft op in alle winters van de jaren dat zij daarna de titels wonnen en op alle vrijdagen van de GP's in die jaren geroepen dat ze nog flinke stappen hadden te zetten.

Ergens geloof ik dat wel. Ze hebben tot en met de laatste race van 2022 de W13 door ontwikkeld om alle eigenaardigheden maar te snappen. Red Bull en Ferrari hebben na de zomerstop alleen nog de dingen die in de pijplijn zaten door laten druppelen. De focus stond al lang op 2023. Dat is ook de reden waarom Mercedes de wedstrijd kon winnen. Focus en door ontwikkeling lag al lang bij volgend jaar.

Maar dat neemt niet weg dat ik echt wel hoop dat Mercedes lekker terug komt. Net als dat Alpine een stapje vooruit kan maken. Hoe lekker zou dat zijn? 4 teams strijdend om de podia!
