Ricciardo: 'Op 99% presteren' is niet genoeg

Even leek het erop dat Daniel Ricciardo zonder Formule 1-werkgever voor 2023 kwam te zitten, na afgelopen seizoen opnieuw teleurstellende resultaten te hebben behaald met McLaren. Oud-werkgever Red Bull bood hem echter een rol als reserverijder aan voor 2023, wat betekent dat de Australiër de kans krijgt om zichzelf te resetten en klaar te stomen voor een potentiële nieuwe kans als fulltime Formule 1-coureur in 2024.

Daniel Ricciardo had opnieuw een tegenvallend seizoen te verduren. Na in 2021 de overstap te hebben gemaakt van Alpine naar McLaren ontstond er veel hype rondom de achtvoudig racewinnaar. Ricciardo schatte in dat zijn toekomst met McLaren als werkgever een betere basis was om te kunnen vechten voor de rijderstitel. De karakteristieken van de McLaren-bolide pasten echter niet bij de Australiër waardoor zijn Formule 1-campagne met McLaren zonder succes is afgerond. De beslissing van de McLaren-top was dan ook duidelijk: Formule 2-kampioen Oscar Piastri werd voor 2023 aangekondigd ter vervanging van Ricciardo. Vorige week kondigde Red Bull Ricciardo’s terugkomst aan, ditmaal als reserverijder voor het Formule 1-team. Ricciardo blikt terug op het afgelopen seizoen.

"Ik moest de liefde (voor F1) blijven vinden. Terwijl de tweede helft van het seizoen onderweg was, moest ik even wegstappen en mijzelf heropbouwen. Als je dat op ons niveau (in de Formule 1) niet hebt, dan doe ik mezelf en de mensen om mij heen geen plezier. Ik wil niet zeggen dat ik het verloren heb, maar wel dat ik daar bang voor was", vertelt Ricciardo tegenover Speedcafe.

Het niveau dat van de Formule 1-coureurs vereist wordt is enorm. Ogenschijnlijk leek Ricciardo toe te zijn aan een moment om zichzelf te kunnen herpakken. De rol bij Red Bull zorgt ervoor dat de Australiër zich in 2023 kan resetten terwijl hij tegelijkertijd een naam draagt die in en rond de Formule 1-paddock genoemd zal blijven worden. Ricciardo laat dan ook doorschemeren dat de samenloop van omstandigheden het beste is voor de coureur. "We zijn als Formule 1-coureurs zijnde heel goed in wat we doen, maar we zijn net zo goed mensen die fysiek en mentaal vermoeid kunnen worden. Op dit niveau is dat gevaarlijk – op 99% presteren is niet genoeg", sluit Ricciardo af.

Met de aankondiging van de samenwerking tussen Red Bull en Ricciardo is de coureur terug bij zijn familie in de koningsklasse. De thuiskomt voor de coureur geeft Ricciardo de tijd en ruimte om zichzelf opnieuw op te bouwen en aan te sterken voor 2024: het jaar waar eventuele nieuwe kansen liggen.
