Brown: Ricciardo’s Red Bull reserverol is beste kans voor F1-comeback

Daniel Ricciardo is terug bij zijn Formule 1-thuisbasis. Na avonturen bij Renault en McLaren, is de Australiër terug bij de Red Bull-familie. De achtvoudig racewinnaar neemt de rol aan als officiële reserverijder van Red Bull. Volgens voormalig teambaas Zak Brown is zijn overstap terug bij Red Bull als derde rijder zijnde de beste kans voor hem om een herintrede als fulltime Formule 1-coureur te verdienen.

De oud-teamgenoot van Max Verstappen Daniel Ricciardo is terug bij Red Bull. Ricciardo maakte in de zomer van 2018 de verrassende aankondiging dat hij vanaf het daaropvolgende seizoen de overstap zou maken naar concurrent Renault. Vanuit het Franse team maakte Ricciardo twee jaar later de transfer naar McLaren, om vervolgens anno eind 2022 weer bij zijn oude liefde terug te keren: Red Bull. Als officiële reserverijder van het team krijgt Ricciardo de kans om goed gebruik van de adempauze te maken.

McLaren-baas en inmiddels oud-werkgever van Ricciardo Zak Brown meent dat zijn voormalig rijder de juiste keuze heeft gemaakt om zo snel mogelijk weer een fulltime stoeltje in de Formule 1 te vinden. "Kijk maar wat er gebeurde met Nyck (de Vries, die officieel bij de Italiaanse Grand Prix debuteerde omdat Albon ziek was) na één goede sessie. Uit het niets was hij heel gewild. Wanneer een Red Bull-coureur om de één of andere reden niet kan racen en hij (Ricciardo) springt in de auto en presteert goed, dan kan de situatie ineens veranderen."

Eerder dit seizoen kreeg Ricciardo te horen dat McLaren hem zou vervangen voor Formule 2-kampioen Oscar Piastri. Het gaf de achtvoudig racewinnaar enigszins de gelegenheid om met andere teams om de tafel te gaan. Brown is verrast dat Ricciardo geen stoeltje voor 2023 heeft kunnen vinden. "Ik ben verrast dat een aantal teams die naar een coureur zochten hem niet geselecteerd hebben. Maar ik denk dat er ook een paar teams tussen zaten waar hij niet geïnteresseerd in was."

"Het is overduidelijk dat hij deel uit wil blijven maken van het spelletje. Vorig jaar won hij Monza en acht Grand Prix-overwinningen – dat zijn er veel. Het zit in hem, wij (McLaren) hebben het alleen helaas niet in hem naar boven kunnen halen. Hopelijk zal iets in de toekomst hem die kans bieden, want we zien Daniel graag weer terug op de grid", sluit Brown af.

Misschien als assistent van Vettel of vervanger van David Coulthard dat ie nog een mooi baantje aan zijn F1 carrière over kan houden.
Op dat vlak is ie alles van Verstappen niet is en nooit zal zijn.

Beste kans? Ja want enige kans!
Ik zie hem bij RB echt nooit de opvolger van PER worden, hooguit stand in voor als een van de 4 vaste rijders niet kan rijden..
En begrijpelijk, oude bezems inzetten is als trekken aan een dood paard.

  Bwoa weet dat nog niet zo goed hoor.
  Ricciardo kon het altijd best wel vinden met Max en waren nochtans ze meer aan elkaar gewaagd dan nu met Perez. Zelfs na hun gekende Baku incident lukte dat. Horner had hem erbij willen houden maar het was uiteindelijk Ricciardo zelf die de plug eruit trok en dat deed behoorlijk pijn voor de eergierige Brit.
  
  Dat hij nu terug wordt opgepikt spreekt boekdelen. Voor Horner en Marko was na zijn vertrek de deur ferm gesloten. Als de situatie met Perez in 2023 verder verzuurt kan dit zeker een optie zijn. Enkel zal Ricciardo altijd de nr2 rijder zijn van dat team. Vroeger zou hij dat niet hebben aanvaard, intussen wel.

  Precies. Red Bull wilde hem absoluut niet kwijt. Perez had vervolgens de mazzel dat het team bijna geen enkele andere optie had. Hij zit er echter niet omdat men hem zo geweldig vindt. Hij zit er om een plotseling ontstane vacature op te vullen. Ricciardo zal z'n lesje wel geleerd hebben nu en heeft blijkbaar z'n schepen niet achter zich verbrandt, getuige zijn terugkeer. Ik denk dat hij uiteindelijk weer naast Max zal rijden. Maar zoals altijd: de tijd zal het leren...

Naar mijn mening is dit om Perez onder druk te zetten. Met Mercedes wat mee gaat doen in de top en, hopelijk, Ferrari ook draait Helmut zijn hand er niet voor om om halverwege het seizoen de boel te wisselen als het nodig is. Nu heeft ie Ricciardo als stok achter de deur om het stoeltje te vullen bij AT als de Vries presteert óf gewoon om Perez te vervangen bij RB. In de tussentijd mag eerstgenoemde lekker guitig zijn op sponsordagen.
