Magnussen houdt dubbel gevoel over aan Schumacher-Hulkenberg switch

Haas-coureur Kevin Magnussen krijgt vanaf volgend seizoen een nieuwe teamgenoot. Mick Schumacher moet het team verlaten na twee jaar voor Haas te hebben gereden. Plaatsvervanger is Nico Hulkenberg. De Duitser is een oude bekende van Magnussen; het "suck my balls, honey" akkefietje tussen de twee na de Grand Prix van Hongarije 2017 werd zeer populair onder de Formule 1-fans. Magnussen laat weten dat er geen kwaad bloed meer tussen hem en zijn nieuwe teamgenoot zit, maar dat hij een dubbel gevoel overhoudt aan het afscheid van Schumacher.

Kevin Magnussen maakte sinds de start van 2022 weer deel uit van de Formule 1. Na een periode van twee jaar lang zonder stoeltje te zitten, werd de dertigjarige Deen aangetrokken door het team van Haas. Naast jongeling Mick Schumacher wist Magnussen vrijwel meteen indruk te maken door bij de eerste Grand Prix meteen in de punten te eindigen. Voor Schumacher verliep het seizoen stukken minder. De zoon van zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Michael Schumacher had moeite de VF-22-bolide en crashte meermaals. Zijn tegenvallende prestaties het afgelopen seizoen betekende een exit voor Schumacher, waardoor Formule 1-bekende Nico Hulkenberg uiteindelijk door het team als de vervanger werd aangewezen.

Magnussen meent een dubbel gevoel over te houden aan de coureurswisseling: "Het is een leuk moment, maar tegelijkertijd ook een jammerlijk moment. Ik mag Mick graag en had een goed jaar met hem. Ik vind dat hij het aan het einde van de dag goed gedaan heeft. Ik wens hem het beste, ik weet beter dan bijna iedereen dat je terug kan komen, ondanks dat je je stoeltje hebt verloren", richt Magnussen zich naar Schumacher.

"Aan de andere kant kijk ik er naar uit om met Nico samen te gaan werken. Hij is een coureur met veel ervaring en ik denk dat hij van grote waarde van het team zal zijn. We hebben een leuk seizoen gehad en ik kijk ernaar uit om hopelijk volgend jaar een volgende stap te kunnen maken."

Wat betreft of de relatie tussen hem en zijn nieuwe teamgenoot opgeklaard is, antwoordt Magnussen: "Ik weet zeker dat het goed zal gaan. In het begin van dit jaar heb ik Nico voor het eerst echt gesproken. Het was eigenlijk ook meteen de eerste keer dat we om de gebeurtenis (in Hongarije 2017) konden lachen. Het zal vast leuk gaan worden."
