Magnussen reflecteert op Formule 1-comeback

Kevin Magnussen heeft een succesvol seizoen achter de rug. De Haas-coureur maakte aan het begin van dit jaar een onverwachte terugkomst in de Formule 1 en wist meteen goede resultaten neer te zetten. Magnussen reflecteert op een succesvol jaar, het jaar van zijn comeback in de koningsklasse.

Ter vervanging van Nikita Mazepin kwam bekende Kevin Magnussen in beeld. De coureur werd bij het einde van het 2020-seizoen ontslagen bij het team van Haas, maar bij het begin van dit jaar kwam zijn voormalig werkgever weer op de deur kloppen. Met amper voorbereiding op zak en een nieuwe generatie Formule 1-auto’s klaar voor gebruik, was het nog afwachten in hoeverre Magnussen goede resultaten kon neerzetten. Naast jongeling Mick Schumacher wist Magnussen echter sterke races te rijden, met als hoogtepunten een P5-finish bij race één in Bahrein en een pole positie score bij de Braziliaanse Grand Prix. Magnussen kijkt terug op 2022.

"Het was een ware reis. Aan het begin van het seizoen waren we heel sterk, we begonnen het seizoen in Bahrein met een P5. Dat was een hele verrassing omdat het team de twee voorgaande jaren veelal moeite had. Om meteen dit resultaat neer te kunnen zetten was prachtig", meent Magnussen.

Bij de Grand Prix van Brazilië werd een sprookje geschreven. Magnussen pakte pole positie bij de kwalificatie op Interlagos waardoor Magnussen vanaf de eerste startplek de sprintrace mocht aanvangen. "Iedereen vond het prachtig. Het was een bijzonder moment voor het team. Het is een herinnering die we voor altijd met elkaar zullen hebben", vertelt Magnussen over zijn team. "Om het seizoen op deze manier te beëindigen is waardevol, dus daar ben ik heel blij mee."

Vooral in de eerste seizoenshelft had het team van Haas een redelijke auto. Echter pakten de upgrades aan de auto, die rondom de zomerstop werden uitgerold, niet zo goed uit als die van degenen om hen heen, waardoor het team langzaamaan achteruit viel. Magnussen is vol vertrouwen dat zijn team het seizoen in 2023 weer net zo goed kan beginnen als een jaar eerder: "Ik denk dat een aantal andere teams zoals Alpine en Aston Martin hun auto nog beter wisten te ontwikkelen, maar er is niks dat ons tegenhoud om tijdens de winterstop de aansluiting weer te vinden."

Ik vind het toch een beetje oude wijn in oude zak geval. Wat mij betreft gaan we Kevin na volgend jaar inruilen voor nieuw talent.

  Zie ik persoonlijk toch liever Kevin rijden moet ik zeggen, het is een kleurrijk figuur en hij rijdt een stuk sneller dan die 2 "nieuwe talenten"... Yuki vind ik dan weer wel interessant om te zien rijden, misschien omdat het zo'n driftkikker is? geen idee eigenlijk..

  Op den duur heb je gewoon je portie talenten gehad. Leclerc/Russell/Norris/ mogelijk Piastri zijn mooie aanwinsten geweest.
  
  Tsunoda/Schumacher/Latifi/Mazepin/Albon/Devries/Sargeant/Zhou/Ocon hebben net zo weinig WK potentie als Kevin Magnussen.
