Wolff zag vertrek Binotto aankomen: "Heeft het langer volgehouden dan ik dacht"

Het vertrek van Mattia Binotto als teambaas van Ferrari kwam voor weinigen als een verrassing. De Italiaan stond al geruime tijd onder druk en zijn vertrek werd dan ook al aangekondigd door de Italiaanse media. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff zag het vertrek van Binotto dan ook al aankomen.

Het team van Ferrari kende een redelijk goed seizoen waarin men voor het eerst sinds 2019 weer Grands Prix won. Charles Leclerc stond na de eerste drie races van het seizoen zelfs op kop in het wereldkampioenschap, betrouwbaarheidsproblemen en mislukte tactieken gooide uiteindelijk roet in het eten. De fouten en problemen hebben er nu dus voor gezorgd dat Binotto kan vertrekken.

Binotto's concullega's zagen zijn vertrek al aankomen. Ook voor Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff was dit geen grote verrassing. In de podcast Beyond the Grid spreekt Wolff zich uit: "Mattia en ik hebben zo onze momenten gehad in de laatste jaren. Het is geen geheim maar in 2022 ging het al veel beter. Het was echter altijd al duidelijk dat hij onder enorme druk stond. Als de teambaas van Ferrari wordt, dan kan je beter goede voorwaarden over een vroegtijdig vertrek hebben staan in je contract. Het was onvermijdelijk maar hij heeft het langer volgehouden dan ik had gedacht."

      Eens met @Joop en wat Toffe Toto over Ferrari vertelt is m.i. niet ver bezijden de waarheid.

      Daarbij is dit ook een kort moment (vanaf de 38e minuut) uit de 54 minuten durende podcast, als je de hele podcast met de Amerikaan Tom Clarkson van Beyond the Grid afluistert schept dit ook een meer genuanceerd beeld...

      Oesje, gaan we hier al beginnen nuanceren bij Toto 😉

      Alle gekheid op een stokje - ze waren niet de beste vrienden en hij zag hem in de toekomst niet bij Mercedes passen. Daarvoor waren er wat teveel glazen gebroken. Ongeacht vertelde hij wel dat Mattia zonder enige twijfel de meest veeleisende en lastige job had in F1 - je draagt de hele natie mee en zeker als Italiaan met een giftige media. Met dat gegeven heeft hij het veel langer volgehouden dan hij had verwacht. Een logische gevolgtrekking als je ziet wat voor een schietstoel het is daar bij Ferrari na de jaren van succes bij Montezemolo... en het afkalven ervan. Objectief duidelijk, niet? 😊
