Verstappen denkt aan Le Mans: "Zou ook een keer iets alles willen doen"

Max Verstappen rijdt al sinds 2015 in de Formule 1. De Nederlander is zeer succesvol in de koningsklasse van de autosport en prolongeerde dit jaar zijn wereldtitel. Toch wil Verstappen niet voor de rest van zijn loopbaan racen in de Formule 1, hij heeft verregaande interesse in de enduranceracerij.

Verstappen heeft zijn interesse in de endurancewereld nooit onder stoelen of banken gestoken. De Nederlander rijdt in de simracerij regelmatig in de virtuele edities van bekende lange-afstandsraces. De Nederlander verscheen bijvoorbeeld meerdere keren aan de start van de virtuele 24 uur van Le Mans. In de toekomst wil hij graag meedoen aan de 'echte' 24 uur van Le Mans.

Alonso

Verstappens Formule 1-collega Fernando Alonso heeft in de afgelopen jaren wel meegedaan aan de 24 uur van Le Mans. Met het team van Toyota won Alonso de autosportklassieker tweemaal. Verstappen ziet Alonso als een voorbeeld en wordt geciteerd door Ouest-France: "Als Fernando daaraan meedoet, dan wil hij rijden in een competitieve auto en wil hij strijden voor de zege. Ik ben precies hetzelfde. De Formule 1 is heel erg leuk en ik ben nu heel erg succesvol. Ik zou echter ook een keer iets alles willen proberen."

Jos

Verstappen wil echter niet gaan haasten met zijn endurance-ambities. De Nederlandse coureur wijst bijvoorbeeld naar zijn vader Jos die op latere leeftijd succesvol was in de LMP2. De Red Bull-coureur wijst ernaar: "Ik wil het daarom ook niet allemaal te gehaast doen. Ook omdat er nu heel erg veel aan het veranderen is in de enduranceracerij. Ik vind dat het beter is om eventjes te wachten en te kijken wat er gebeurt. Daarna maak ik een keuze."
