De wereldkampioenschapstitels gingen naar Max Verstappen en Red Bull Racing, in de persoon van Nyck de Vries stond er onverwachts een Nederlandse supersub op en na 22 Grands Prix kan GPToday.net de balans opmaken. Welke coureurs veroverden topresultaten en wie presteerden er ondermaats? Vandaag in deel twaalf: Daniel Ricciardo, een boer met kiespijn.

Het Formule 1-seizoen 2022 van Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo kende dit jaar een seizoen om snel te vergeten. De eens zo bejubelde Australiër werd volledig omver geblazen door zijn teamgenoot Lando Norris. Ricciardo kende een lastige seizoensstart en werd slechts veertiende in Bahrein. Toegegeven, de McLaren was nog niet bepaald snel maar zijn teamgenoot Norris presteerde in de races daarna steeds beter. Ricciardo werd zesde in zijn thuisland maar finishte daarna pas weer in Azerbeidzjan in de punten.

Terwijl Norris alweer een podium pakte en punten bleef binnenharken, vocht Ricciardo zijn gevechten uit in het middenveld. Alhoewel de man uit Perth de beschikking had over een langlopend contract, moest hij toch vrezen voor zijn positie. De lach van de eeuwig lachende Ricciardo veranderde steeds meer in die van een boer met kiespijn. Ricciardo’s prestaties bleven immers ver achter bij zijn Britse teamgenoot en zijn resultaten pasten niet bij de grote ambities van McLaren.

Lange tijd leek het erop dat Ricciardo door het oog van de naald zou kruipen maar in de zomerstop zorgde uitgerekend Oscar Piastri voor een nieuwe situatie. Piastri ontkende een contract voor 2023 bij Alpine en volgens het geruchtencircuit aaste hij op een McLaren-zitje. Voorafgaand de Belgische Grand Prix kwam de aap uit de mouw, McLaren maakte bekend dat Ricciardo’s contract na 2022 wordt ontbonden. Een week later werd Piastri aangekondigd en bevond Ricciardo zich in een benarde situatie.

In de absolute slotfase van het seizoen begon Ricciardo steeds beter te presteren, hij werd vijfde in Singapore, zevende in Mexico en negende in Abu Dhabi, maar het was niet goed genoeg meer voor een racecontract bij een ander team. Het leek erop dat de Australiër geen zin had in een stoeltje bij een team als Haas en na de seizoensafsluiter kwam zijn Formule 1-loopbaan voorlopig ten einde.

In 2023 zal Ricciardo niet stil gaan zitten. Vlak na het seizoen tekende hij een contract als derde coureur bij zijn oude liefde Red Bull Racing. De Australiër wil het liefst terugkeren op het hoogste podium in 2024 maar dat is vanzelfsprekend nog niet zeker. Aankomend jaar zal hij zich waarschijnlijk vooral gaan richten op promotiewerk en rondjes in de simulator, de glimlach zal vermoedelijk niet verdwijnen.

Jammer dat we nooit meer de shoey krijgen te zien.
Vond dat altijd zo ontzettend leuk om te zien en ook helemaal niet goor ofzo.
Echt een 'tradenark' van Daniël,haha zo grappig!

Ik heb enerzijds het gevoel dat Daniel de pech heeft gehad om bij McLaren binnen te komen in een team en een auto dat helemaal rond Norris gebouwd is. Natuurlijk hebben ze hun best gedaan om ook Daniel optimaal te laten presteren, maar perfect werd het nooit. Een beetje alsof je een vrouw probeert te versieren die al een vriend heeft. En dat vrat aan Daniel. Hij heeft Red Bull verlaten omdat hij geen 2e viool wilde spelen en nu dacht hij bij McLaren het Alfa mannetje te kunnen zijn en bleek hij alsnog 2e viool achter een pubertje te moeten spelen.

Ik hoop dat Daniel terug bij Red Bull de rust weer terugvindt en zijn snelheid. De grote vraag is natuurlijk waar hij zou kunnen rijden in 2024? Bij Sauber ter vervanging van Bottas? Terug naar Renault t.v.v. Ocon? Of zien we hem toch weer in de Red Bull als 2e viool naast Max? Verder zie ik eigenlijk nergens een toekomst voor hem. Wellicht bij Andretti als die toch ooit komt?
