Wolff hoopt op Mercedes-overwinningen en titels, maar blijft onzeker

Het F1-team van Mercedes kent een lastig afgelopen seizoen. Onder leiding van Toto Wolff finishte het Duitse merk als derde in het constructeurskampioenschap, achter Ferrari en Red Bull. Wolff gelooft echter dat de heersende mentaliteit in zijn team doorslaggevend zal zijn om volgend seizoen sterker terug te komen.

Bij de introductie van de nieuwste generatie Formule 1-wagens kwam het gebruikelijke topteam van Mercedes niet goed uit de verf. Het zag hiermee concurrenten Red Bull en Ferrari aan de horizon verdwijnen. Mede dankzij het porpoising fenomeen, dat een groot probleem bleek voor een aantal F1-teams waaronder Mercedes, moesten er geregeld aanpassingen doorgevoerd worden in de opstelling van de auto. Het team, dat voorafgaand dit jaar op uiterst dominantie wijze tussen 2014 en 2021 de constructeursbokaal behaalde, was hiermee genoodzaakt om de titeldroom van 2022 op te geven om haar problemen aan te pakken.

"Ik ben een man die het glas halfleeg ziet. Als je op logische wijze terugkijkt naar het seizoen, was Red Bull heel dominant. Ze wonnen meer dan vijftien races. Het zal heel lastig worden om een betere ontwikkelingslijn te hebben dan die van hen (Red Bull) en Ferrari, maar ik geloof in onze organisatie. Fundamenteel gezien draait het niet om het tekort aan downforce, maar simpelweg om de downforce op de auto te laten werken", vertelt Wolff in de Beyond the Grid-podcast.

Op de vraag of Mercedes meerdere Grand Prix-overwinningen in 2023 kan behalen, antwoordt Wolff: "Met onze leermomenten van de auto en de zelfverantwoordingscultuur zullen we volgend jaar in een potentere vorm verkeren. Hopelijk zullen we puur op snelheid races kunnen winnen en voor het kampioenschap kunnen vechten. Maar is dat een zekerheid? Absoluut niet."

Tis te hopen dat ze er volgend jaar weer staan, die dominantie van Redbull gaat me onderhand toch wel tegenstaan hoor.

Die Max die overal moet komen opdraven.....gaat hem ook niet in de kouwe kleren zitten.

Komend seizoen komt nog te vroeg om voor de titel(s) te kunnen meedoen, maar ik verwacht wel dat Mercedes een paar overwinningen zal boeken. En ik zou ook niet raar staan te kijken als ze Ferrari wel voorbijstreven in het kampioenschap. Red Bull ligt denk ik nog te ver voor.

Ze wonnen meer dan vijftien races.

Toto kijkt slechts naar Max gewonnen races. Hoe pijnlijk kan het zijn dat Mercedes hun dominantie is doorbroken.

Ik zie het als rb in de periode 2014-2020. Op het einde van het seizoen komen ze terug en dan kunnen ze meedoen voor 2 races en in de winter neemt rb weer een grote stap voorsprong.
