Verstappen volgt vaderlijk advies: "Al valt mijn hoofd eraf"

Max Verstappen staat bekend als een ijzersterke coureur. De Nederlander laat zijn kracht met enige regelmaat zien en staat daarnaast zeker open voor adviezen van bijvoorbeeld zijn vader Jos. De Red Bull Racing-coureur rijdt op diens advies dan ook nooit meer met de zogenaamde head padding.

De Formule 1 is een zeer zware sport, de coureurs krijgen regelmatig te maken met bijvoorbeeld enorme G-krachten. De coureurs trainen daarvoor dan ook hun nek, een normaal mens zou niet kunnen omgaan met deze grote krachten. Verstappen en zijn collega's hebben soms ook last van de G-krachten en kunnen dan ook gebruik maken van de head padding.

Pussy pads

Deze steunstukken kunnen de nek van de coureurs ontlasten. Verstappen maakt hier echter geen gebruik van en daar is hij duidelijk over in Viaplay F1 Talk: "Ik weet nog dat ik net met een Formule Renault 2.0 reed en toen werd ik uitgenodigd voor een F3-test. Dat was toen veel zwaarder. Na een paar runs kon ik toen mijn hoofd niet meer omhoog houden. Ik had vulling nodig aan de zijkant. Ik reed in Valencia tegen de klok in en dat maakte het nog erger. Mijn vader noemde die steundingen pussy pads, ik kon mijn hoofd niet omhoog houden!"

Mugello

Verstappen volgde het advies van vader Jos op en deed de 'pussy pads' in de ban. Hij is daar heel erg eerlijk over en deelt zijn ervaringen: "Ik heb sinds die dag geweigerd om gebruik te maken van die dingen. Toen we in 2020 naar Mugello gingen, wist niemand hoe zwaar het ging worden. Een aantal coureurs hadden de padding al gebruikt en het team vroeg of ik dat ook wilde. Al valt mijn hoofd eraf, ik ga het echt nooit meer gebruiken!"

En dan wat? Jammer dat we niet te lezen krijgen wat het voordeel is om ze nìet te gebruiken. Het komt nu slechts over als machopraat.

  Volgens mij had zijn team die "pussy pads" op Mugello in VT1 wel op de headrest geplaatst. Al heel snel kwam Max met de mededeling over de boardradio dat die dingen er af moesten. Later verklaarde hij dat hij het vervelend vindt dat de de bewegingen van zijn hoofd belemmerd worden door die pads. Vooral als hij zijn hoofd wil draaien om de bocht door te kijken.

  Klopt @Bartman, bovendien kun je je nek enorm veel trainen om er zo weinig mogelijk last van te hebben en dat is wat Max dan ook doet.

  Vrij oud nieuws - zei hij al in 2020 bij Turkeye voor de fameuze T8 waar ze lange tijd 5G moeten verdragen. Padding is niet alleen voor de nek en wordt ook aan de benen en voeten gebruikt. Er zijn ook verschillende plaatsen: op de Hans of de headrest of het chassis tot ook met elastiek rond de benen aan de zijkant binnen de cockpit. Of je alles/gedeeltelijk of niks gebruikt dat is een persoonlijke keuze, veel hinder om het wel te gebruiken is er niet. Je vangt die schokken niet (meer overal) zo op, het is eerder een gevoelskwestie. Met de nieuwe aero regels gaan ze straks meer DF dan ooit hebben en dat wordt het fysiek best wel onderschat.

  Pads verschillen in densiteit (hardheid) en dikte - ze geven andere kleuren ifv de densiteit - als scarbs kent vind je dat gemakkelijk terug, die heeft hier ooit wat gedetailleerde info over gegeven 😉
