Steiner prijst Magnussen: "Hij is volwassener geworden"

Bij de start van het 2022-seizoen van de Formule 1 maakte Kevin Magnussen zijn comeback. Eind 2020 kreeg Magnussen net zoals Romain Grosjean te horen dat zijn diensten voor het daaropvolgende jaar niet meer nodig waren. Notabene hetzelfde team, namelijk het Amerikaanse Haas, heeft Magnussen gevraagd om zich voor 2022 weer aan te sluiten. Nu het seizoen erop zit, kijkt diens teambaas Guenther Steiner terug hoe het seizoen van zijn comeback-kid verlopen is.

Al bij de eerste Grand Prix van 2022 maakte Kevin Magnussen indruk. In Bahrein scoorde de Deen een verrassende vijfde finishplaats, waardoor het team goede punten wist binnen te halen. Terwijl Magnussen’s teamgenoot Mick Schumacher veel moeite had om op consistente basis goede resultaten neer te zetten, was Magnussen de stabiele factor in het team.

"Ik denk dat wanneer hij terugkwam en meteen punten scoorde, hij meteen het team al achter zich had staan. Daarna zou ik zeggen dat hij na de zomerstop een beetje meer moeite had. We weten niet waarom. Maar daarna wist hij weer (in performance) terug te komen, dus ik denk dat een kwestie is van de ups en downs die we als team hadden. We moeten dat gaan analyseren", vertelt Steiner tegenover de internationale pers.

Bij de één-na-laatste Grand Prix, die werd verreden in het Braziliaanse Sao Paulo, verraste Magnussen de F1-wereld. In een kletsnatte kwalificatie bleef de Deen bovendrijven waardoor hij namens Haas een pole position scoorde. Steiner meent dat zijn terugslag te maken heeft met de groei die Magnussen heeft gemaakt. "Hij is simpelweg volwassener geworden, hij is natuurlijk ouder geworden. We worden allemaal wat kalmer en kunnen dingen op een iets anders manier bekijken. Meestal is hij heel relaxed en nu met de combinatie van Mark (Slade, ervaren raceingenieur) samen met hem hoop ik dat we in de toekomst een nog betere Kevin zullen zien", besluit Steiner.

Magnussen zal in zijn omgang met zijn engineer en team volwassener zijn geworden, op de baan zagen we in 2022 nagenoeg dezelfde Kevin als voorheen.

Alles kon na 2021 alleen maar beter bij Haas, de auto en de coureurs.
Dat kwam in 2022 ook zo uit, inclusief een lucky (maar verdiende) pole.
Magnussen is een oké F1-couereur - net als Hulkenberg - maar niet meer dan dat...
