Wolff begon te wennen aan winnen: "Alsof je acht keer kerst vierde"

Het team van Mercedes kende dit jaar geen succesvol seizoen in de Formule 1. De Duitse renstal had een grote achterstand op de concurrentie van Ferrari en Red Bull Racing. Mercedes won slechts één Grand Prix, George Russell in Brazilië, en Toto Wolff geeft toe dat hij heel erg blij was met die zege.

Mercedes domineerde de Formule 1 sinds 2014. De renstal werd tussen dat jaar en 2020 elk jaar wereldkampioen bij de coureurs en de constructeurs. In 2021 pakten ze wederom de constructeurstitel maar werd Lewis Hamilton wel verslagen door Red Bull-coureur Max Verstappen. Dit jaar zakte Mercedes door het ijs en moest men een inhaalslag inzetten.

Kerst

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff en zijn manschappen moesten dus wennen aan het niet winnen van races. De Oostenrijker was echter wel trots op het feit dat men nooit de schouders ophaalde over zeges. In de Season Debrief van Mercedes geeft hij wel toe dat het begon te wennen: "Het was alsof je acht keer achter elkaar kerst vierde. De achtste keer is niet meer zo leuk als de eerste keer. Ik weet nog dat ik altijd zei: 'Dit was weer een zege, fijn. We zijn blij.'"

Emoties

Door de vele zeges in de afgelopen jaren, viel dit seizoen eigenlijk wel tegen. Wolff zag dan ook dat er veel emoties omhoog kwamen na de zege van Russell in Brazilië. De Oostenrijkse teambaas was trots: "Het is interessant om naar onszelf te kijken en te zien dat er emoties om de hoek kwamen kijken. We hadden die niet echt verwacht. Het was enorm bevredigend, het was eigenlijk maar een race en de derde plaats in het klassement. De puzzelstukjes vallen langzaam weer op hun plaats zodat we kunnen meestrijden vooraan het veld."

Komende jaren geen kerst meer voor Toto dus dat wordt oude filmpjes terugkijken en hopen dat ze in 2026 weer 100 pk meer dan de rest hebben. Vrees echter dat Toto nooit meer kerst zal vieren.

  Als Pasen en Pinksteren op dezelfde dag vallen zit er misschien nog wel een keertje een witte kerst in voor Toto, maar de komende jaren zullen het Max en RBR zijn die de kerstboom zullen optuigen.
