Mercedes was sinds 2014 het te kloppen team met acht constructeurstitels op een rij, maar kwam in 2022 schromelijk tekort om mee te dingen om het kampioenschap door aanhoudende issues met de Silberpfeile. De formatie uit Brackley en Lewis Hamilton had het hier zwaar mee volgens Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff.

"Nou ja, het is moeilijk om Lewis te zien worstelen", zei de Oostenrijker. “Maar het is net zo moeilijk om te zien dat dit fantastische team een ​​kampioenschap heeft gewonnen en zes maanden later het technische euvel niet boven water krijgt."

Mercedes schoot geen gat in de roos met de W13 en liep vanaf de openingsrace in Bahrein achter de feiten aan. Verwoede pogingen om de zaakjes op orde te krijgen, creëerde alleen maar meer hoofdbrekens.

“We hebben het van alle kanten bekeken, we konden het verschil niet vinden. En je ziet je coureur uit de auto stappen die te stijf en onbestuurbaar is, en dan niet de oplossing niet echt gevonden", vervolgde Wolff.

Meestal wist Mercedes in het verleden voor alles wel een oplossing om de aansluiting te vinden of de voorsprong te vergroten met innovatieve vondsten, maar in 2022 liep het anders met het 'zero sidepod' concept. "Dat was iets waarvan ik niet dacht dat we in zo'n situatie terecht zouden kunnen komen", concludeerde Wolff.

Is eigenlijk wel goed voor de competitie en nu is het zaak om terug te komen. Dan moet ze m.i. meer voldoening geven dan op automatische piloot in de top te opereren.

      Precies, aan elke periode van overheersing (om het d-woord niet te gebruiken) komt een eind, je weet alleen nooit wanneer, maar met de nieuwe regels als 'scharnierpunt' had Mercedes er rekening mee kunnen (of moeten) houden...
