Brawn staat klaar om F1 te helpen wanneer nodig, maar alleen in 'adviserende rol'

Ross Brawn is na afloop van het F1-seizoen van 2022 officieel met pensioen. De Britse ingenieur van oorsprong was het afgelopen jaar nog sportief directeur van de Formule 1, maar besloot om na een lang en bewogen carrière in de autosportwereld om nu eindelijk het werk naast zich neer te leggen. Met het nieuw jaar van start en de Formule 1 in volle voorbereiding op het aankomende seizoen, meent Brawn echter dat hij zijn rug naar de koningsklasse toch nog niet helemáál heeft gekeerd.

Van autosporttechnicus tot F1-team eigenaar: Ross Brawn heeft alle hoeken van de koningsklasse inmiddels wel gezien. Met het afsluiten van 2022 zou het de bedoeling zijn dat de 68-jarige Brawn nou écht afscheid zou gaan nemen van het werken in de Formule 1, om voortaan op z’n gemak de sport vanuit z’n luie stoel te kunnen gaan volgen. In gesprek met Autosport, vertelt Brawn dat zijn eerdere "ambities" toch van best wat beweegruimte voorzien zijn.

"Ik zal geïnteresseerd blijven. Stefano (Domenicali, CEO van F1) is een hele goede vriend en, zoals ik al tegen hem zei, mijn telefoon staat altijd aan. Dus als er iets is waar ik mee kan helpen en het neemt niet teveel van mijn vrije tijd weg, dan sta ik er meer dan positief voor open om te helpen. Het zal dan om een adviserende rol gaan, in plaats van een actieve rol."

Brawn stond aan de voorgrond van veranderingen in de Formule 1 tijdens de periode waarin Liberty Media het stokje overnam en voor een groeiende populariteit in de sport wist te zorgen. Zijn aanbieding tot een luisterend oor is dan ook ongetwijfeld om ervoor te zorgen dat de sport in de juiste richting blijft groeien. "Het is een unieke sport en ik ben heel blij om te zien hoe de sport in populariteit gegroeid is. We moeten deze groeiende passie behouden en beschermen. Ik neem afscheid, maar ik moet zeggen dat ik verheugd ben met waar de Formule 1 vandaag de dag staat. Ik denk dat we niet moeten vergeten wat we hebben gedaan om daar te komen en ervoor zorgen dat we vooruitgang blijven boeken," meent Brawn.

  Nou dat is wel heel erg kritisch Larry.
  
  Brawn heeft echt wel zijn toegevoegde waarde bewezen in F1.
  De nieuwe regels brachten de grid veel dichter bij elkaar zelfs al in het eerste jaar. Akkoord dat RB dominant was maar dat gaat niet zo blijven. Het verschil van de eerste met de laatste is veel kleiner geworden.
  Daarnaast is het volgen van wagens en inhalen sterk verbeterd.
  En niet onbelangrijk, het regelboek heeft een groot deel van de grijze zones en de eindeloze verschillende interpretaties weg gehaald door met Cad coördinaten te werken.
  
  Dat gezegd, de sprintraces daar ben ik ook niet echt fan van maar misschien is dat iets wat nog moet groeien of worden aangepast - verandering ligt altijd moeilijk.

  Daar heb je wel gelijk aan @Mr_Flexible, maar anders had iemand anders die klus wel geklaard en hij heeft het niet in zijn eentje gedaan.
  Het gaat mij ook om de sprintraces en hoe hij de F1 verkwanselt voor het grote geld (en Liberty)...
  
  Gaat niet gebeuren @Patrick, waar ik inmiddels wel aan gewend ben is jouw reactie dat ik er nog aan moet wennen...

  Snap wel die weerstand tov sprintraces, dat heb ik ook nog steeds maar sta er (intussen) met een "open mind" tegenover - mogelijk heeft dat wel zijn merites met nog wat extra aanpassingen. Patrick daartegenover ben ik dan nog niet gewend (grapje!) :-)
  
  Brawn heeft wel zijn eigen team samengesteld en hij was de grondlegger van die veranderingen - niet zo zeker dat een ander dat beter had gedaan - Had jij iemand voor ogen die het beter had gedaan?
