Albon snapt beslissing van Ricciardo om F1-break te nemen

Daniel Ricciardo is weliswaar terug bij zijn oude vertrouwde team van Red Bull, de achtvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar heeft echter zijn oude rol niet terug. Ricciardo heeft genoegen moeten nemen met een reserverol bij het team, in plaats van een full-time stoeltje. Volgens de Australiër is de uitkomst dat 2023 een F1-loos jaar wordt, de beste. Alex Albon snapt Ricciardo’s beslissing om niet in te gaan bij potentiële aanbiedingen lager geklasseerde teams, zodat hij zich een jaar lang kan focussen op herstel voor 2024.

Daniel Ricciardo heeft gekozen voor een reserverol onder ontspannen voorwaarden. De Australiër hoeft namelijk niet bij elke Grand Prix aanwezig te zijn, tegelijkertijd zal hij hier en daar fungeren als coureur tijdens een demo-run. Deze relaxte afspraken betekenen een uitgelezen kans voor Ricciardo om goed op adem te komen, zodat hij zich naar eigen zeggen voor kan bereiden op een volledige F1-herintrede voor 2024.

Alex Albon kent de situatie. In 2019 debuteerde Albon voor het team van Toro Rosso, maar moest na de zomerstop van dat jaar al meteen de opstap omhoog maken naar het team van Red Bull. Met weinig ervaring op zak en veel druk op z’n schouders moest Albon z’n uiterste best doen om de Red Bull-bolide te temmen. Hier slaagde de Thais-Britse coureur echter niet in, waardoor hij aan het eind van 2020 het team van Red Bull moest verlaten en zich voor het daaropvolgende jaar zonder stoeltje vond.

Op de vraag van Autosport of hij de situatie van Ricciardo begrijpt, antwoordt Albon: "Ik zat in een iets andere positie, maar ik snap wat hij bedoelt. (Ricciardo’s keuze voor Red Bull-reserverol) Wanneer je een aantal slechte jaren in de Formule 1 hebt gehad, en ik kan hierover meepraten met mijn 2020-ervaringen, dan maakt het je helemaal leeg. We leven ervoor om competitief en hongerig te zijn. Het draait er allemaal om, om zo goed mogelijk te presteren. Dus ja, het is heel zwaar, en het duurde een paar weken om de emotionele impact van het geen F1-stoeltje te hebben te verwerken."

Die Elbun toch (yak). De "break" van Ricciardo is echt niet iets waarvoor hij zelf gekozen heeft, lijkt me sterk. Hooguit een beter alternatief dan helemaal van de grid te verwijderen. Nog zo'n jaar McLaren had hem en mijn favoriete team ook geen goed gegaan.
