Steiner ziet mentaal sterkere Magnussen: "Heeft ook met leeftijd te maken"

Kevin Magnussen maakte dit jaar zijn comeback in de Formule 1. De Deense coureur werd door Haas last minute vastgelegd als de vervanger van de ontslagen Nikita Mazepin. Magnussen beleefde een redelijk succesvol seizoen en hij ontving veel complimenten. Teambaas Günther Steiner ziet dat Magnussen volwassener is geworden.

Magnussen reed voorheen al van 2017 tot en met 2020 voor het team van Haas. De Deen moest daarna vertrekken en zijn Formule 1-loopbaan leek ten einde te zijn. Magnussen trok naar de Verenigde Staten en was daar succesvol in de IMSA-klasse. Nadat Haas besloot Mazepin te ontslaan naar aanleiding van de oorlog in Oekraïne. Magnussen werd als vervanger gepresenteerd en hij liet zien dat hij het kunstje nog niet verleerd is.

Haas-teambaas Günther Steiner zag een compleet nieuwe Magnussen binnenkomen aan het begin van het jaar. De Italiaanse teambaas kent Magnussen goed en spreekt zelfs van een volwassenere coureur. Bij Autosport legt Steiner deze redenatie uit: "Het heeft ook te maken met leeftijd en hij is vader geworden. Hij is teruggehaald in plaats van dat hij moet gaan smeken voor een stoeltje. Dat doet op mentaal vlak ook iets met je, het geeft je veel vertrouwen. Dit gaat er vooral om hoe sterk je bent op het mentale vlak. Hij is op dat vlak nu sterker dan jaren geleden."
