Haas-reserve Fittipaldi trekt naar WEC voor 2023

Haas-reservecoureur Pietro Fittipaldi heeft voor het aankomende seizoen een nieuw zitje gevonden. De 26-jarige Braziliaan, die enkele jaren geleden als vervanger van de geblesseerde Romain Grosjean twee Grands Prix in de Formule 1 mocht rijden, heeft een verbintenis bij het succesvolle WEC-team van Jota Sport getekend. Bij die renstal zal Fittipaldi een LMP2-bolide besturen.

De oudste kleinzoon van tweevoudig Formule 1-wereldkampioen Emerson Fittipaldi blijkt op jonge leeftijd al een heuse allrounder. Zo werd Pietro al eens Rookie of The Year bij de Indianapolis 500, nam hij meermaals deel aan de 24 uur van Le Mans en bestuurde hij allerlei verschillende racewagens - bijvoorbeeld DTM en Super Formula. Voor 2023 maakt Fittipaldi de stap naar het World Endurance Championship. Eigenlijk was het in 2018 al de bedoeling dat de kleine Braziliaan een voltijd seizoen in het wereldkampioenschap enduranceracen zou afwerken, maar een verschrikkelijke crash op Spa-Francorchamps gooide destijds roet in het eten.

Het team van Jota Sport heeft een kampioenschap te verdedigen in het WEC en blijft zodoende met één wagen actief in de LMP2. Afgelopen jaar wonnen Roberto Gonzalez, Will Stevens en Antonio Felix da Costa namens Jota de wereldtitel in die specifieke klasse. Jota Sport beschikt voor 2023 over een LMDh-bolide van Porsche, die ze als privateer mag inzetten. Fittipaldi bestuurt de enig overgebleven LMP2-wagen van het team en zal zodoende de uitdaging krijgen om de titel van zijn voorgangers te prolongeren.

In het afgelopen seizoen reed Fittipaldi namens Inter Europol Competition in de European Le Mans Series, het kleine broertje van het WEC. De Braziliaan neemt één van zijn oude teamgenoten mee naar Jota: ook David Heinemeier Hansson verkast immers van Inter Europol naar het kampioenschapsteam. Voormalig Formule 3-coureur Oliver Rasmussen, die afgelopen jaar nog enkele races in die opleidingsklasse mocht rijden als vervanger, completeert het rijderstrio van Jota Sport.
