Verstappen 'verrast' over verschil in punten naar Ferrari in 2022

Met een voorsprong van bijna honderdvijftig punten op runner-up Charles Leclerc in het F1-rijderskampioenschap van 2022, wist Max Verstappen zijn tweede achtereenvolgende wereldtitel op dominante wijze binnen te slepen. Echter meent de tweevoudig wereldkampioen dat het grote gat naar zijn achtervolgers een misleidend beeld tekent van de onderlinge verschillen tussen zijn team (Red Bull) en Ferrari.

De F1-teams van Red Bull en Ferrari waren vooral in de eerste seizoenshelft flink aan elkaar gewaagd. Het publiek werd meermaals getrakteerd op een spannend duel, dat vooral tussen Max Verstappen en Charles Leclerc werd uitgevochten. Terwijl Leclerc in eerste instantie nog werd gezien als dé titelconcurrent van Verstappen, verloor de Ferrari-coureur bij het inkomen van de zomerstop al snel het zicht.

Voor 2023 heeft menig Formule 1-fan de hoop en verwachting dat het team van Mercedes wat performance terugwint, waardoor het aankomende seizoen de potentie heeft om het strijdtoneel te worden voor een gevecht tussen drie topteams, namelijk eerdergenoemde, Red Bull en Ferrari. Volgens Verstappen is de kans aannemelijk dat hem in 2023 een moeilijker seizoen staat te wachten, vooral als er de vergelijking wordt gemaakt met de dominante wijze waarop de Nederlander zijn tweede wereldtitel behaalde. Ook spreekt hij zijn verbazing uit over het uiteindelijk grote puntenverschil tussen hem en Ferrari.

Op de vraag of Verstappen graag gezien had dat Ferrari in 2022 het gevecht langer had kunnen volhouden, antwoordt hij: "Ja, aan de ene kant wel. Als je kijkt naar hoe gewaagd de auto’s (van Red Bull en Ferrari) aan elkaar waren, was het verrassend om überhaupt zo’n groot (punten) verschil te hebben. Er waren namelijk niet veel weekenden waar wij (Red Bull) heel dominant waren."

"Maar uiteindelijk ben ik natuurlijk blij met hoe alles verlopen is, vooral na het seizoen dat ik daarvoor had. (in 2021) Het is niet altijd goed voor je om altijd zo’n soort gevecht te hebben. En sowieso denk ik dat volgend jaar alles dichterbij elkaar zit", sluit Verstappen af.
