Daytona eindigt teleurstellend voor VeeKay: "Heel erg balen"

Afgelopen weekend werd de 24 uur van Daytona verreden. De Nederlandse inbreng was groot en de kans op succes was zeker aanwezig. Indycar-coureur Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout ging met de nummer 11 van TDS Racing op jacht naar succes, een crash van een teamgenoot gooide echter roet in het eten.

VeeKay kwam met zijn teamgenoten van TDS Racing uit de LMP2-klasse en hij had zeker kans op een goed resultaat. De Nederlander deelde zijn auto met Mikkel Jensen, Scott Huffaker en Steven Thomas. VeeKay deed niets verkeerd en kon zijn tegenstanders aardig bijhouden. Een crash van teamgenoot Thomas zorgde er echter voor dat zijn race te vroeg ten einde kwam.

Balen

Van Kalmthout was vanzelfsprekend teleurgesteld na de uitvalbeurt van zijn team in de 24 uur van Daytona. In een persbericht sprak hij zich uit: "Dit is heel erg balen. Je wil de race ten eerste finishen, want om hem te winnen zal je in ieder geval onder finishvlag door moeten rijden. Mijn teamgenoot Steven kwam in aanraking met een GT toen hij aanremde voor de Le Mans-chicane, vervolgens vloog hij de muur in. De hele linkerkant was kapot."

Van Uitert

In de LMP2-klasse was de kans op Nederlands succes groot. In de andere TDS-bolide joegen Giedo van der Garde en Job van Uitert op de zege. Van Uitert ging in de slotfase de fout in en spinde, hierdoor viel hij terug naar de vierde plaats in de klasse. De overallzege ging naar de Acura-coureurs Tom Blomqvist, Colin Braun, Helio Castroneves en Simon Pagenaud van het team van Meyer Shank Racing.

Wat een einde van de race! 24 uur racen en het dan bijna op een foto finish aanlaten komen.
