Alonso voorspelt 'lastige' eerste races bij nieuwe werkgever Aston Martin

Tijdens de lancering van de AMR23-wagen van Aston Martin was een enthousiaste Fernando Alonso te zien. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen deed vorig jaar de Formule 1-wereld doen opschudden door bekend te maken zijn oude liefde van Alpine (Renault) te verlaten voor het zeer ambitieuze Aston Martin. Alonso kijkt met een niet te stoppen honger uit naar de toekomst bij zijn nieuwe werkgever, maar voorspelt dat zijn eerste Grands Prix voor het nieuwe team naar alle waarschijnlijkheid niet de resultaten zullen geven die de Formule 1-wereld van hem gewend is.

Tweevoudig wereldkampioen Fernando Alonso is officieel een Aston Martin F1-coureur. De Spanjaard maakte in 2021 zijn comeback in de Formule 1 door voor het team van Alpine te gaan rijden. Alonso had zijn zinnen gezet om weer voor de overwinningen (en de wereldtitel) te kunnen vechten, maar de Franse renstal kwam niet dichterbij aan de gebruikelijke top drie van Mercedes, Ferrari en Red Bull.

Vorig jaar besloot Alonso het roer om te gooien. Het opkomende team van Aston Martin, dat onder leiding van Lawrence Stroll zeer ambitieuze toekomstplannen bekendmaakte, bleek een hoofdstuk dat passend zou zijn bij de honger van Alonso. Naast Lance Stroll zal Alonso in het British Green naar verwachting in 2023 stevig in het middenveld verkeren, maar de hoop van zowel de Spanjaard als het team is dat er elk opvolgend jaar een hogere versnelling bereikt kan worden.

Vooraf aan de lancering van Aston Martin’s 2023-auto, de AMR23, blikt Alonso vooruit op de eerstkomende periode als coureur namens de Britse renstal. "Ik verwacht een aantal lastige races in het begin te hebben, totdat we doorhebben hoe de auto zich gedraagt en in welke tijdsframe we een setup kunnen vinden", begint Alonso tegenover internationale pers.

"Bij de eerste vijf of zes races bij Alpine had ik moeite om de voorkant (van de auto) aan te voelen, net zoals de instellingen van bijvoorbeeld de stuurbekrachtiging. We hebben dit jaar maar anderhalve dag (3 dagen totaal, verdeeld onder 2 coureurs) om in Bahrein te testen, dus ik ben ervan bewust dat ik niet op 100% in Bahrein en Jeddah zal zijn – misschien ook niet in Australië."

Tevens gelooft Alonso in een rooskleurige toekomst voor het team van Aston Martin: "Ik denk dat ik met Lance (Stroll) een goed referentiepunt heb. Ik geloof niet dat de resultaten van dit jaar onze gewoonlijke positie zal zijn", sluit Alonso af.

Ik denk dat het helemaal niks word met Alonso. Ik verwacht dat hij veel sneller zal zijn dan Stroll en omdat te maskeren zal Stroll wat voordeeltjes krijgen in de strategie, waardoor Alonso weer boos weggaat bij een team
