Mercedes: Terugkeer naar zwartkleurige livery is vanwege gewichtsbesparing

Het Formule 1-team van Mercedes is voor dit jaar weer teruggekeerd naar een zwartkleurige vechterswagen. De renstal, die al jaar en dag bekend staat als “de zilveren pijlen”, maakte sinds 2020 de keuze om haar auto niet zilver, maar zwart te verven. Volgens teambaas Toto Wolff was toentertijd het verspreiden van de boodschap om racisme tegen te gaan de beweegreden; met opnieuw een terugkeer naar de zwarte verfpot voor dit jaar staat er nog een extra reden op de lijst: namelijk het verminderen van gewicht.

Niet alleen Mercedes heeft de keuze gemaakt om sommige delen van de auto onaangetast te laten; ook bij onder andere Ferrari, McLaren en Williams is duidelijk te zien dat niet alle carbon-onderdelen met voorbedachten rade onbespoten bleven, dit om zoveel mogelijk kilo's kwijt te raken.

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff is in elk geval rechtdoorzee: volgens de Oostenrijkse Mercedes-topman is de keuze om de W14-bolide zwart te laten deels om de kilo’tjes te besparen. "Vorig jaar hadden we een overgewicht, dus hebben we voor dit jaar uitgevogeld hoe we elke gram kunnen besparen. Nu zie je dat de geschiedenis zich herhaalt. Je ziet dat de auto een aantal 'rauwe' carbonstukken heeft, naast de toevoeging van een aantal onderdelen die matzwart geverfd zijn."

"Toen we in 2020 onze livery (van zilver naar zwart) veranderden was de hoofdreden om diversiteit en gelijkheid te ondersteunen. De kleur zwart werd toen deel van onze DNA, dus we zijn nu blij dat we daarnaar terugkeren."

Bij de oorspronkelijke start van het Formule 1-seizoen van 2020 was de W11-bolide van Mercedes in eerste instantie nog in de traditionele zilveren kleur. Na een verlate start van het seizoen vanwege de coronapandemie, kreeg de Duitse renstal de kans om tijdens de afwachting van de eerste Grand Prix de gelegenheid om haar auto tot een zwartkleurig uiterlijk om te dopen. Dat seizoen bleek uiteindelijk één van Mercedes' meest dominante tot dusver. Zal de geschiedenis zich ook op dit vlak herhalen? Dat is nog een kwestie van afwachten.

Zwart of grijs, vind het allemaal maar bijzaak. Ze lijken toch grotendeels van hun concept van vorig jaar te zijn afgestapt, de vloer naar achteren lijkt nu veel meer bedekt. Toch waar ze met het oude concept veel winst dachten te gaan maken. Maar de nadelen waren blijkbaar groter dan de voordelen (zij Steiner dat vorig jaar vooraf al niet?) En als Red Bull qua sidepods ook een klein beetje richting Mercedes is gegaan zoals leek op die vage foto van Silverstone, dan kruipt het wat dat betreft misschien toch redelijk naar elkaar toe. Ben benieuwd hoe het zich gaat ontvouwen. Mercedes en zn fans lijken vooral heel blij te zien dat ze af zijn van de W13, maar als Red Bull en Ferrari met een degelijke doorontwikkeling op de proppen komen moet ik nog zien of Mercedes wel direct kan aanhaken.

Het is eigenlijk terug naar hoe de ooit witte duitse auto’s aan hun benaming zilveren pijlen komt.
Ook toen wegens gewichtbesparing was het verhaal.

Jammer dat Toto deze kan onbenut laat terug te grijpen op de geschiedenis

  Die hele mythe van vroeger is een sterk verhaal van dhr Neubauer. Maar het is zo vaak aangehaald dat het de waarheid is geworden. Het is allang ontkracht door een journalist mbv een rijder en ik dacht techneuten uit het team van destijds. Dat weet Toto ook wel inmiddels.

  Komt omdat Mercedes al jaren lang het verkeerde zilver gebruikt... De Mclaren Vodafone kleurstelling was immers prachtig. Maarja zwart is dan maar een goed alternatief.

Ik heb uit betrouwbare bron dat de coureurs kaal geschoren gaan worden en zonder onderbroek racen, tijdens het weekend zijn ze ook gepland "aan de race" alles om gewicht te besparen.
