Verstappen kiest ideaal rijdersduo: "Ik zou eerst voor een ervaren coureur gaan"

Max Verstappen gaat aankomend seizoen proberen om zijn derde wereldtitel op rij te pakken in de Formule 1. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur maakt zich echter niet druk en is vooralsnog wel in voor een geintje. Verstappen krijgt bijvoorbeeld de vraag wie hij zou contracteren als coureurs, mocht hij zelf de teambaas zijn.

Verstappen is al geruime tijd actief in de koningsklasse van de autosport en in de tussentijd heeft hij al tegen de nodige andere coureurs geracet. De Nederlandse regerend wereldkampioen weet dan ook goed wat voor vlees hij in de kuip heeft als het aankomt op de concurrentie. Hij steekt zijn bewondering voor bepaalde coureurs dan ook niet onder stoelen of banken.

De Red Bull Racing-coureur wordt in gesprek met Mobil 1 The Grid dan ook gevraagd naar welke coureurs hij zou contracteren, als hij zelf teambaas zou zijn. Verstappen komt met een enigszins te verwachten antwoord, hij kiest voor zijn vrienden: "Ik zou waarschijnlijk eerst voor een ervaren coureur gaan, dus dan kies ik voor Fernando Alonso. Daarnaast zou ik dan ook een jonge coureur in de auto gaan zetten. Dat zou dan in dit geval Lando Norris worden."

      Toch wel frapant dat niemand Russell noemt. Naar mijn idee wordt die jongen nog steeds belachelijk onderschat.
      Russell maakte in de F2 meer indruk dan bijvoorbeeld Norris. Was bij Williams soms belachelijk snel, en verslaat in zijn eerste volle Mercedes jaar Hamilton. Veel mooier had hij het niet kunnen doen toch?

      Als ik nu zou mogen kiezen, dan zou Verstappen-Russell mijn ideale duo zijn als teambaas.

      Russell was afgelopen jaar constant, maar over een race kon hij vooral vooraan eindigen door omstandigheden. Ik begrijp dat men nog niet Russell gelijk stelt aan Veratappen en Leclerc. En ook nog niet aan Russell. Hij heeft duidelijk talent maar heeft erg veel tijd vergaan bij een matig team dat toen hij er reed al helemaal niet in de buurt zat van de rest.
      Eerst maar eens wat stappen zetten. Wie weet kan hij wat meer groeien komend seizoen.

      Leclerc maakt fouten omdat hij geen auto heeft waarmee hij de rest naar huis kan rijden. Zodra hij een echte wk auto heeft wil ik wel eens zien of hij net zoveel fouten maakt.

      Leeftijd heeft natuurlijk niet alles te maken met over the hill zijn of niet Ilmop... Ik ken twintigers die al over the hill zijn en vijftigers die dat niet zijn. Het is toch overduidelijk dat Fernando nog enorm hongerig is en dat Hamilton volgevreten is? Het vuur is gedoofd.

      In Italie had hij de snelste auto. In Frankrijk had hij de snelste auto. In Hongarije waar hij de witte banden aan gort reed door zijn ongeduld had hij de snelste auto.
      In Japan, waar hij de laatste bocht die fout maakte, had hij inderdaad niet de snelste auto.

      Ik ben fan van Leclerc, minder dan van Verstappen, maar van mij mag hij kampioen worden. Uiteraard liever Verstappen. Echter zal hij zich op een paar punten moeten verbeteren. Anders heeft hij een dominante auto nodig. En dat zie ik niet gebeuren nog komend seizoen.
