'Vandoorne kan niet invallen voor Stroll, Drugovich grootste kanshebber'

Nu Lance Stroll geblesseerd heeft moeten afhaken voor de wintertestdagen van de Formule 1 op het Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, heeft het team van Aston Martin mogelijkerwijs een probleem. Normaliter worden de testtaken namelijk verdeeld tussen de twee vaste coureurs en aangezien Stroll fysiek onmogelijk kan rijden, moet het team mogelijk naar een vervanger kijken.

Aston Martin heeft met Formule E-wereldkampioen Stoffel Vandoorne en Formule 2-kampioen Felipe Drugovich twee regerende titelhouders op haar reservebank, maar het lijkt ondenkbaar dat de Vlaming naar het circuit waarop hij zeven jaar geleden zijn Formule 1-debuut mocht maken, zal afreizen. Vandoorne moet komend weekend namelijk acte de presance geven tijdens de vijfde ePrix van het Formule E-seizoen 2023. Deze wordt aanstaande zaterdag verreden in Kaapstad. Vandoorne is reeds naar de Zuid-Afrikaanse stad afgereisd.

Zodoende maakt Drugovich kans om wederom meters te maken in een actuele Formule 1-bolide, iets wat hij aan het einde van het vorige seizoen tijdens de rookietest op het Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi ook al kon doen. Op zijn eigen sociale kanalen deelde Drugovich in ieder geval foto's van een simulatortest in de Aston Martin-fabriek, wat erop kan wijzen dat het Britse team hem te elfder ure probeert klaar te stomen voor een invalbeurt.

Voor het tweede achtereenvolgende jaar moet Aston Martin met een plan-B naar de wintertest driedaagse reizen: vorig jaar bleek Sebastian Vettel positief te hebben getest, waardoor hij bij zowel de testdagen als de eerste twee Grands Prix van het jaar verstek liet gaan. Destijds was landgenoot Nico Hülkenberg zijn vervanger. De Emmeriker kan dit jaar niet in de Aston Martin springen, omdat hij reeds een voltijdovereenkomst met het team van Haas heeft getekend.

Aston Martin heeft wat recht te zetten: de Britse stal, eigendom van de Canadese miljardair Lawrence Stroll, wist in het Formule 1-seizoen 2022 niet verder te reiken dan een teleurstellende zevende plaats in het constructeursklassement. In 2021 was de equipe op dezelfde plaats geëindigd.

Tuurlijk kan Vandoorne invallen... de race in zuidafrika is zaterdag. Vrije trainingen zijn ook op zaterdag... is maar een paar uurtjes vliegen...

Donderdag en vrijdag kan hij gewoon in de auto als het moet.

Laat Alonso gewoon 2,5 dag rijden en Drugovich een halve. Heb je tenminste waardevolle informatie

Ze hebben maar één wagen beschikbaar en om daar dan Drugovich in te laten rijden?!
Gewoon Alonso drie dagen laten testen, lekker ervaring in die wagen op laten doen, alhoewel mij dat wel zwaar lijkt zo lang achter het stuur.

  Klopt @Larry, had ik ook aan gedacht en dan een halve dag.
  Maar ik neem aan dat ze vrijdag toch wel zullen weten wat Stroll precies heeft en of hij aan de eerste GP kan deelnemen.

  Ja, dat was in 2015. Kevin Magnussen heeft hem toen vervangen, maar heeft volgens mij de race niet kunnen starten.

Alonso is nieuw in het team én heeft een schat aan ervaring. Om die twee redenen zou ik hem gewoon 100% laten rijden, waarbij je ook de meest waardevolle info krijgt. Lijkt mij voor zowel Alonso als het team de meest waardevolle optie. Dat het heel lullig is voor Drugovich, ja dat is dan een ander verhaal.
