Grosjean schrok achteraf van horrorcrash: ''Ik realiseerde mij niet de impact van buitenaf''

Romain Grosjean beleefde in 2020 een horrorcrash op het Bahrein International Circuit waarbij hij met zijn Haas F1 door vangrail schoot met een vuurzee als gevolg. De Fransman kon zich uit de zeer penibele situatie redden en hield alleen flinke brandwonden over aan zijn handen. De huidig IndyCar-coureur besefte niet gelijk hoe groot het eigenlijk incident was

"Vanuit mijn oogpunt was het een groot ongeluk, maar ik realiseerde me niet de impact of hoe gruwelijk het van buitenaf was", herinnert Grosjean zich. ''Pas de volgende dag toen ik iemand vroeg om me te laten zien hoe het eruit zag, besefte ik het. Mijn vrouw keek eigenlijk naar die race met mijn vader en mijn kinderen. Dat moment zullen ze zich hun hele leven herinneren. Het waren gewoon toeschouwers die wachtten om iets te horen, wachtend om iets uit Bahrein te zien.''

Nogmaals legde Grosjean uit wat hij deed om te ontsnappen aan de dood.
"Ik moest de hoofdsteun breken, er met mijn helm op slaan en uiteindelijk slaagde ik erin mijn helm erdoor te krijgen en rechtop te gaan staan in de stoel. Ik realiseerde me dat mijn linkervoet vastzat in het chassis en ik trok zo hard als ik kon aan mijn linkerbeen. Mijn schoen bleef in het chassis zitten, maar mijn voet kwam los, dus ik was vrij om uit de auto te stappen.''

Ook andere mensen die ter plaatsen waren hielpen Grosjean om uit de brandende wagen te stappen. ''Dr. Ian Roberts, Alan van der Merwe van de dokterswagen en een brandweerman probeerden een gat in het vuur te maken om me eruit te helpen. Ik geloof dat dat me in ieder geval heeft geholpen om een beeld te krijgen van waar ik heen moest en waar de uitgang was.''

''De overlevingsdrang is er voor je bij een enorme impact. Ik was intact. Het chassis is nog heel, de halo is er en afgezien van de beschadigingen en brandplekken is het nog zoals het hoort. Ik denk dat dat mijn leven heeft gered.”

  Ja, hij ging dwars door de vangrail elementen als door n brievenbus. De halo heeft een onthoofding voorkomen.
