Alonso blijft rustig "Podiumfinish niet ons doel"

Het team van Aston Martin oogde tijdens de driedaagse wintertest van vorige week zeer sterk. De Britse renstal kreeg veel lovende reacties en het is de algehele verwachting dat ze een stap hebben gezet. Fernando Alonso is blij met zijn nieuwe wagen, maar hij mikt in Bahrein niet op een podiumplek.

Alonso staat aan de vooravond van zijn eerste Grand Prix voor het team van Aston Martin. De Spaanse veteraan kwam in de winter over van Alpine en hij barst meteen van de ambitie. Tijdens de wintertest van vorige week oogde Alonso gedreven en reed hij tevens een aantal zeer veelbelovende rondjes. De concurrentie bekijkt de prestaties van Aston Martin dan ook met argusogen.

Doel

Alonso zelf blijft gewoon met beide benen op de grond staan. De Spaanse tweevoudig wereldkampioen loopt niet te hard van stapel. Alonso aast op een realistisch doel en wordt geciteerd door Motorsportweek: "We gaan ons best doen in de race van dit weekend. Om eerlijk te zijn, een podiumfinish is geen doel van ons. Ik denk dat dingen over de auto moeten blijven leren. We hebben maar tweeënhalve dag getest met een compleet nieuwe auto."

Stap

Alonso wijst vooral op het feit dat de topteams vorig jaar oppermachtig waren. Hij denkt dan ook dat deze stap haast te groot is voor hem: "De drie topteams waren vorig seizoen in een compleet andere competitie, ze lapten soms zelfs het vierde team. Je had maar zeven auto's in dezelfde ronde. We kunnen die stap niet zetten in slechts één winter. Ik denk dat we heel erg blij zijn met deze auto. Ik denk wel dat we met beide benen op de grond moeten blijven staan en dat we goed moeten blijven werken."

Ik had vroeger een bloedhekel aan Alonso,maar dat is echt de laatste jaren 180 graden gedraaid.
Wat een baas en hopelijk heeft hij nu eens de goede beslissing genomen en echt een podiumplaats wagen te hebben.

We gaan het zien. VT1 is absoluut niet representatief qua temperatuur en ook hebben lange niet alle teams met dezelfde banden gereden.
VT2 wordt al iets interessanter wat betreft ware snelheid en potentieel.
Op basis van wat ik in VT1 zag zeg ik dat RB nipt het snelste is, gevolgd door Fer en Mer die elkaar nauwelijks ontlopen en hooguit 2 tiende achter RB zitten. AM zou het vierde team kunnen zijn waarbij Alonso duidelijk de man is.
Lance zal wel flink geschrokken zijn van het verschil tussen een uitgebluste en trage Vettel enerzijds en zeer gemotiveerde snelle Alonso anderzijds.

41 jaar en nog bovenin meedraaien,zegt dat wat over de F1,ja,maar zijn gedrevenheid en talent kan je gewoon niet onderschatten.
WK zie ik hem niet meer worden,maar podiums en een overwinning dit seizoen zou ik hem van harte gunnen.

  @snailer,in de IndyCar was het al jaren bekend dat mannen op leeftijd nog hoed mee konden komen,maar F1 was toch andere koek.
  Ik kan mij Mansell nog herinneren in 1995 die kon amper nog lopen en was totaal uitgeput,nou stond Mansell ook niet bekend om zijn ongelofelijke fitheid,maar ik had toen al wel het idee dat F1 gewoon te zwaar wordt na je 40ste.
  Schumacher was nog fit in 2010 tot 2012,maar de scherpte was er wel af ,ondanks dat hij toch nog op zijn geliefde Monaco pole trainde.
  Zoals ik al aangaf zie ik Fernando geen WK meer worden,maar deze man is gewoon buitenaards. (ja nu een keertje geen Max)
  Ik heb daar veel respect voor dat als je je schaapjes al jaren op het droge hebt en je eigenlijk als coureur niks meer te bewijzen hebt en dan nog op zo'n hoog niveau meedoet.
  Daar kan je alleen maar zwaar respect voor hebben.
