Verstappen geeft jarige vader ultiem cadeau: "Erg blij dat ik op pole sta"

Op de verjaardag van zijn vader Jos wist Max Verstappen de pole position te pakken op het Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir. De regerend wereldkampioen was de snelste in een kwalificatiesessie waar het ontzettend close was, Verstappen mocht juichen en dat stemde hem zeker tevreden.

Na een drietal lastige trainingsessies waarin de Red Bulls overduidelijk iets langzamer waren dan de bolides van de concurrentie, was alles in de kwalificatie anders. Verstappen liet in het derde kwalificatiedeel zien dat hij uit het juiste racehout is gesneden en hij sloeg de aanvallen van teammaat Sergio Perez, de Ferrari's, Fernando Alonso en de Mercedessen af.

Vader Jos

Verstappen mocht zich na afloop van de kwalificatie melden voor de microfoon van interviewer van dienst David Coulthard. In gesprek met de Schotse oud-coureur feliciteerde Verstappen zijn vader en was hij zeer tevreden: "Het was een lastige start van het weekend en vandaag kon ik niet echt mijn ritme vinden, maar gelukkig konden we in de kwalificatie alles voor elkaar krijgen. Ik ben heel erg blij dat ik op pole sta. Ik ben blij voor het hele team na het afgelopen seizoen en Checo was ook snel."

Aanpassingen

Verstappen leeft dan ook met veel vertrouwen toe naar de Grand Prix die morgen op de planner staat. De Red Bull-coureur barst in ieder geval weer van het zelfvertrouwen: "Het was fantastisch en ik kijk uit naar morgen. De aanpassingen hebben de auto wat langzamer gemaakt, maar we gaan alsnog snel en dat is fijn om te zien. In de loop van het seizoen zal je iedereen sneller zien gaan, dat is het mooie van deze sport. Ik ben positief verrast dat ik op pole sta na de moeilijke trainingen."
