Alonso hongerig naar nóg sterkere AMR23-auto: "Moeten nog veel potentie ontgrendelen"

Aston Martin en Fernando Alonso zijn in dromenland. Nadat de Britse renstal halverwege 2022 de gok waagde om voor dit seizoen voor een compleet nieuw aerodynamisch concept te kiezen, lijkt het team flink in de mix met de gebruikelijke top drie te zitten. Volgens Alonso voelt het tot nu toe behaalde resultaat geweldig, maar toch kijkt hij al uit dat de AMR23-bolide van Aston Martin nog beter zal zijn.

Al tijdens de wintertestdagen leek het Formule 1-team van Aston Martin er goed voor te staan. Terwijl de Britse renstal het vorig jaar nog met een zevende constructeursplaats moest doen, lijkt het team nu echt in de mix met de gebruikelijke top drie van Red Bull, Ferrari en Mercedes te zitten.

"Het was geweldig", kijkt Alonso terug op de eerste kwalificatiesessie van 2023. "Het gehele weekend is tot nu toe ongelofelijk. Alle trainingssessies voelden bijna te goed om waar te zijn. Tijdens de kwalificatie verwachtten we rond een halve seconde van Red Bull te zitten, dus dat klopte aardig."

"We wisten niet helemaal hoe Ferrari er voor stond. We wisten in ieder geval zeker dat we achter Red Bull waren. We hoeven onze verwachtingen nu helemaal niet te temperen, aangezien we net tijdens de kwalificatie onder dezelfde omstandigheden in de mix met Ferrari en Mercedes zaten. Ongelofelijk."

Alonso liet eerder al weten hongerig te blijven naar het behalen van een derde wereldtitel. De Spanjaard kan het niet geloven dat zijn nieuwe werkgever nu al met een ontzettend goede auto op de grid staat. "Het voelt zo raar dat we op P5 beginnen en misschien wel op meer kunnen hopen. Om eerlijk te zijn dachten we dat dit seizoen de top drie nog onverslaanbaar zouden zijn en dat wij ons in het middenveld zouden begeven. Om nu te kunnen zeggen dat we P5 beginnen en misschien met de Ferrari’s voor het podium kunnen vechten – dit is geweldig", vertelt Alonso vooraf aan de start van de Grand Prix van Bahrein.

"We moeten dit zo laten houden. We moeten hard blijven werken om de races zo goed mogelijk te uit te voeren waarbij we geen een goede start, goede pitstops en geen fouten maken. Tot nu toe is het net alsof we aan het dromen zijn. Acht maanden geleden was dit project nog een gok. We hebben nu een compleet nieuwe auto, dus ik denk dat we nog veel potentie te ontgrendelen hebben."

Alonso lacht als hij nadenkt over welke successen hij tijdens de eerste Grand Prix van 2023 zou kunnen behalen: "Ik moet gewoon lachen als ik denk dat ik tijdens de eerste race al voor een podium zou kunnen gaan. Het voelt te goed om waar te zijn. We hebben tot nu toe gezien dat de Aston Martin goed is met bandendegradatie. Dus als we een kans zien, dan pakken we die", sluit Alonso strijdvaardig af.

  Ik heb het over Alonso, Snelrondje. Er zijn er twee waar Hamilton zich anders rond gedraagt. Het heeft hem bijvoorbeeld een overwinning gekost in Brazilie.

  Ik ben van mening dat Hamilton in de race het snelst was gemiddeld. Dat mag ik vinden. Maar het is nog stteds niet slim, want nu heeft hij gewoon de kans op de overwinning weggegooid.

Goed om te zien dat Fernando weer eens vooraan te zien staan en hij een goede wagen heeft voor de race.
Hopelijk kunnen ze dit niveau vast houden de rest van het seizoen.
De ouwe sluwe vos is weer terug aan de frontlinie!

Zeer knap van Aston en Alonso...maar eerlijk gezegd denk ik dat gedurende het seizoen ze zullen terugvallen....ik denk niet dat ze kracht hebben om door te drukken.

Volgens mij niet want ze hebben tijdens de quali al laten zien snel te zijn. Dus ze doen daar toch iets anders dan dromen. En als Fernando straks op het podium zou komen (wat al heel knap is op zich) dan zijn het dus feiten en geen luchtkastelen. Fernando heeft het nog en AM heeft mogelijk de juiste stappen gezet. Ik zeg: laat het seizoen maar beginnen!!!
