De Vries onnodig schuldbewust: "Uiteindelijk was het de batterij"

Nyck de Vries kende een zeer teleurstellende zaterdag in Saoedi-Arabië. De Nederlandse AlphaTauri-coureur moest de derde vrije training missen door een Power Unit-wissel en in de kwalificatie raakte hij de muur in de allerlaatste bocht. De Vries was na afloop uitgelaten en nam de verantwoording al snel op zich.

De Vries rijdt dit weekend voor het eerst op het Jeddah Corniche Circuit aan de Saoedische kust. Het wil nog niet echt vlotten voor de Nederlander, zijn zaterdag verliep immers zeer rommelig. Aangezien hij voor dit weekend nog geen meter had gereden op het circuit, kwamen zijn PU-problemen in de derde vrije training niet als geroepen. In de kwalificatie kwam hij niet verder dan de achttiende tijd.

Na afloop reageerde De Vries zeer volwassen op zijn tegenvallende sessies. De Nederlandse coureur was zeer eerlijk in gesprek met zijn landgenoten van Viaplay: "Ik nam de verantwoording heel erg snel op mij, maar eigenlijk lag het helemaal niet aan de laatste bocht. De batterij was niet volledig opgeladen en daardoor verloor in tweeënhalve tiende en nog een halve tiende op het laatste gedeelte. Ik vond mijn bocht gewoon niet erg goed dus nam in de verantwoordelijkheid. Uiteindelijk was het echter de batterij."

Nyck de Vries kon de tijd op het asfalt van het Jeddah Corniche Circuit goed gebruiken als de enige rijder die voor dit raceweekend nog nooit op de omloop had geracet.
Een probleem met de power unit, dat vlak voor de derde training werd ontdekt, schopte de plannen van de 28-jarige coureur dan ook in de war. De krachtbron moest gewisseld worden, waardoor hij de hele derde oefensessie moest uitzitten.

"Dat hebben we uit voorzorg gedaan, want we wisten op dat moment niet precies wat er gaande was", verklaart De Vries de motorwissel, om eraan toe te voegen dat hij de onderdelen later waarschijnlijk wel weer kan gebruiken.
