Vasseur verwacht een podiumplek: "Charles vocht voor de pole position"

Het team van Ferrari begon weifelend aan het Saoedische Grand Prix-weekend, maar gisteren in de kwalificatie verliep alles naar wens. Charles Leclerc kwam dicht bij de pole position en ook Carlos Sainz deed het zeker niet slecht. Teambaas Frédéric Vasseur verwacht dan ook een podiumplaats.

Leclerc reed in het derde kwalificatiegedeelte de tweede tijd op 0,155 seconden van de snelste tijd van polesitter Sergio Perez. Door zijn gridstraf moet de Monegaskische coureur vandaag vanaf de twaalfde plaats starten, dat betekent echter niet dat hij geen kans heeft op een goede puntenscore. Sainz kwam ook goed voor de dag en noteerde de vijfde tijd, door de straf van zijn teamgenoot start hij dus als vierde.

Wisselend

Ferrari-teambaas Frédéric Vasseur was na afloop van de kwalificatie redelijk tevreden met zijn resultaten. De Fransman had dan ook een duidelijke analyse in gesprek met Viaplay: "Ik denk dat de kwalificatie over het algemeen best goed was voor ons team. Charles vocht voor de pole position en we kwamen maar een tiende tekort. Carlos had het wat lastiger omdat hij een tweede set banden moest gebruiken in Q1 en daardoor had hij maar één set in Q3."

Podium

Vasseur heeft voor de Grand Prix van vandaag dan ook een duidelijk doel voor ogen. De Franse teambaas van Ferrari vindt dat niet meer dan logisch: "Wanneer je de tweede tijd rijdt in de kwalificatie, dan mag je wel van jezelf verwachten dat je het weekend afsluit op het podium. Je weet ook dat Jeddah op papier het circuit is waar je het beste kan inhalen. Het is ook een rare race, want je kan in een DRS-trein belanden waardoor je de tactiek-kaart moet trekken."
