Conclusie Verstappen: "Er is weinig grip en asfalt is erg glad"

Max Verstappen kende een redelijke vrijdag op het circuit van Albert Park in Melbourne. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur reed de snelste tijd in de eerste vrije training en werd derde in de tweede training. Verstappen klaagde veelvuldig over de boordradio in de eerste training, hij is echter positief over de rest van het weekend.

Verstappen gaat momenteel nog aan de leiding van het wereldkampioenschap en gaat dit weekend in Melbourne op jacht naar zijn tweede zege van het seizoen. De Nederlander liet tijdens de eerste vrije training meerdere keren zijn ontevreden blijken over de boordradio. Hij klaagde over problemen met zijn upshifts, downshifts en de remmen.

Geen ritme

Na afloop van de trainingen meldde Verstappen zich bij de media om de dag te bespreken. De Red Bull Racing-coureur sprak zich uit bij Verstappen.com: "Er is weinig grip en het asfalt is hier glad. Dat was vorig jaar ook al het geval. Het is moeilijk om de banden te laten werken. Het is heel moeilijk als je naar buiten gaat en meteen wil pushen. Met de rode vlaggen in VT1 kom je nooit echt in een ritme. Vanavond gaan we naar de data kijken om te zien wat we moeten doen om de juiste keuzes te maken."

Auto

Tijdens de eerste vrije training was Verstappen nog kritisch, maar na afloop is hij bijgedraaid over het gedrag van zijn auto. Verstappen was zelf positief: "De auto voelde wel goed aan, al is het nu wel moeilijk te zeggen. We kwamen nooit echt in een window waarin ik het gevoel had dat we de banden helemaal onder controle hadden. We moeten dus vanavond nog een paar dingen bestuderen. Dat zal wel goed komen. Morgen wordt het vermoedelijk droog, dus daar gaan we ons op focussen. Dan is het denk ik al moeilijk genoeg."

Albert Park heeft vorig jaar nieuw asfalt gekregen, zag er heel glad uit toen ik daar vorig jaar was. Ander asfalt in ieder geval dan in Bahrein!
Maar goed, elk team heeft hiermee te dealen. Ondanks veel druk op de voorkant hebben ze allemaal last van wat onderstuur.

  Gecombineerd met een wat langer verblijf daar vermoed ik ;-)
  
  De wagens met de minste DF gaan daar natuurlijk het meeste hinder van ondervinden dus gaat dat wel meevallen voor de RB's. Het blijft betreurend dat er altijd kritiek valt (zal vallen) ook als men gewoon de feiten aangeeft.

  Mooi als je het kan combineren natuurlijk dat is niet iedereen gegeven.
  Zo vertrekt mijn broer begin april naar China voor 't werk - hij neemt daar ter plaatse ook een paar behoorlijke vluchten en zal 7 op 7 werken voor 14 dagen. Enkel 1 zondagvoormiddag eens de Chinese muur bezoeken en verliest daarbij wat wettelijke feestdagen "for good measure"....
  Dan liever in combinatie met een GP heen/terug Australië :-)

  Bij mij is de reden iets anders. Ik ben mede directeur van een kantoor die we in Australië hebben, daarvoor moet ik eens in de zoveel tijd daar zijn. Veel zaken met lokale Kamer van Koophandel, maar ook klanten bezoeken en lokaal met het team om tafel, waarna ze zeker een jaar weer door kunnen met tussendoor frequent overleg via Teams.

We mogen toch aannemen dat verstappen met zijn buitenaardse talent niet te veel moeite heeft met glad asfalt dito weinig grip. Neem aan dat hij ons allemaal weer versteld doet staan morgen en overmorgen.
