De Vries kan leven met P15: "Het was een positieve sessie"

Voor het eerst in 2023 bereikte Nyck de Vries het tweede gedeelte van de kwalificatie. In Melbourne zag het er zeker niet slecht uit voor de Nederlandse AlphaTauri-coureur. Hij strandde in Q2 en start de Grand Prix van morgen vanaf de vijftiende plaats. Na afloop was hij redelijk tevreden met zijn dag.

De Vries had een lastige start van het seizoen, maar in het Australische Melbourne lijkt hij langzamerhand weer op dreef te komen. In de kwalificatie leek hij weinig foutjes te maken en was hij snel genoeg om door het eerste gedeelte van de kwalificatie heen te komen. Het was de eerste keer dat hem dit lukte als AlphaTauri-coureur.

De Vries was na afloop zeer in zijn nopjes met zijn kwalificatie op het circuit van Albert Park in Melbourne. De Friese coureur sprak zich uit in een persbericht van zijn team: "Het was een positieve sessie en het is fijn om Q2 te kunnen bereiken, vooral met onze nieuwe updates van dit weekend. De veranderende omstandigheden waren eigenlijk best wel tricky, vooral op het gebied van het opwarmen van de banden. In de laatste run in Q2 konden we ons niet goed genoeg aanpassen."

Punten

De Nederlandse AlphaTauri-coureur had eigenlijk op een beter resultaat gehoopt. De Vries kijkt desalniettemin met een goed gevoel naar de race van morgen: "Ik baal wel een beetje omdat we ons niet konden optimaliseren voor de laatste run, maar over het algemeen was het een fijne run. We hebben niet echt een kans gehad om onze longruns uit te voeren, maar ik kijk uit naar de race en ik hoop op punten."

'Nieuwe vloer helpt absoluut'
De Vries reed tijdens de eerste vrije training op vrijdag met de oude vloer, waarna hij voor de tweede oefensessie naar het nieuwe exemplaar wisselde.
Op de vraag of de nieuwe vloer doet wat het hoort te doen, antwoordt De Vries:
“Het heeft ons zeker een beetje geholpen. Het leek erop dat we iets competitiever waren in deze kwalificatie.
Maar het zit zo dicht bij elkaar in het middenveld dat het allemaal snel weer kan veranderen. Het heeft absoluut geholpen, wat bemoedigend is, maar we moeten als team hard blijven werken om dichter bij de top-tien te komen.”

Dat de trainingen in Melbourne een vrij onrustig verloop kenden door regenbuien en incidenten, maakte het niet gemakkelijk voor het team om de werking van de nieuwe vloer volledig te doorgronden.
De Vries: “Het was zeker niet makkelijk om het maximale eruit te halen. We zitten ook nog steeds met een paar vraagtekens. Maar het is zoals het is. De omstandigheden zijn verder voor iedereen gelijk. We zullen gewoon moeten blijven pushen.”

AlphaTauri worstelde in de eerste twee raceweekenden van het Formule 1-seizoen vooral in de langzamere gedeelten. Of er op dat punt ook progressie is geboekt, valt volgens De Vries momenteel lastig te zeggen:
“Ik denk dat het om behoorlijk subtiele verschillen gaat. Bovendien bevat deze specifieke baan nauwelijks langzame stukken. Maar alle ontwikkeling is natuurlijk welkom, want alle teams zijn hard aan het werk om hun auto te verbeteren.”
Volgens De Vries bestaat er geen wondermiddel waardoor AlphaTauri ineens een grote stap zou kunnen maken.
“Er is geen gamechanger. We zullen niet ineens van de vijftiende naar de achtste plaats. Het gaat om alle kleine details die samen het verschil maken. Je bent constant op zoek naar kleine beetjes en hopelijk kom je dan uiteindelijk in de buurt van de top-tien.”

Q3 gelijk aan Yuki en in Q2 iets meer dan 0.2 sec achter hem, lekker bezig! Ben benieuwd wat hij gaat doen in de Race morgen.

Ik had dit keer echt het gevoel dat hij Yuki zou kunnen verslaan, helaas dat hij het laatste rondje zich niet wist te verbeteren waar al zijn collega's dat wel konden. 2 tienden achter Yuki betekend meteen ook twee coureurs er tussen in dit spannende middenveld.

We dit we dat we zus we zo maar Yuki staat er altijd voor. Misschien moet hij het gewoon eens hebben over zijn eigen prestaties. Als ik een interview van hem hoor heb ik altijd het idee dat hij denkt dat hij de teambaas is ipv een coureur. De Vries is niet goed genoeg als F1 coureur. We als testcoureur omdat hi altijd perfect weet te vertellen waar het aan ligt als het niet goed gaat.

  Op 2 tienden van je (in de F1) meer ervaren teamgenoot staan, is prima in het vierde GP weekend uit je F1 carrière. Als hij tijdens de eerste helft van het seizoen steeds dichter bij Tsunoda komt en er de tweede helft van het seizoen ook vaak voor zit, doet hij het gewoon goed.
  Heb wat geduld, dit is pas het derde weekend in zijn rookie seizoen.

  Ik zie Nyck niet heel lang in de F1 rondrijden. Denk dat dit een geval is van “leuke speler in de eredivisie, maar geen Champions league materiaal.”
