Alonso na achtbaan van emoties: ''P3 en P4 is voor het team een geweldige zondag''

Fernando Alonso koersde in de slotfase rustig af richting een derde plaats. Een hectische slotfase met twee rode vlaggen een bezoek aan de grindbak na een tik van Carlos Sainz zorgden er bijna voor dat de Aston Martin-coureur met lege handen stond.

''Het was een achtbaan van emoties vandaag. Er gebeurde ontzettend veel in het begin, maar ook op het einde in het laatste half uur'', begint de Spanjaard over de laatste rode-vlag-situatie met nog twee ronden op de klok. ''We probeerden te begrijpen wat er gaande was.''

In Bahrein en Saoedi-Arabië had de kampioen van 2005 en 2006 nog de overhand op het team van Mercedes, maar in Melbourne waren de rollen omgedraaid.
''De race zelf was goed in termen van snelheid. Mercedes was erg snel en deed het fantastisch vandaag. Ik kon niet zo snel als hen en dichtbij komen.''

Nadat Alexander Albon keihard de muur inknalde en zorgde voor veel troep op de baan, kwam de Safety Car de baan op. George Russell en Carlos Sainz stapten over op een andere strategie, maar kregen de deksel op hun neus nadat de wedstrijdleiding besloot om de Grand Prix tijdelijk te staken. Voor Alonso was dat een flinke meevaller in de strijd om het eremetaal.

''De eerste rode vlag hielp ons omdat George en Carlos naar binnen kwamen en kregen daardoor posities voor niks. De tweede hielp niet echt door het incident, maar hadden weer geluk en kregen de kans om de finishvlag te zien op de derde plaats. Een P3 en P4 is voor het team een geweldige zondag.''

Of dit naar meer smaakt? ''Ik hoop ooit hoger te eindigen op het podium, een tweede plaats op zijn minst'', sloot Alonso af.

Fernando gaf aan dat hij het probeerde maar dat Lewis uitstekend anticipeerde. Ze waren verrassend lovend naar elkaar, goed om te zien.

  ja, maar wel wat concurrentie erbij nu. Met name van Mercedes, maar ook Stroll komt wat dichterbij. Voorlopig nog geen echte bedreiging, maar als Alonso iets aan gretigheid of snelheid gaat verliezen, dan kan Stroll m misschien af en toe een podium afsnoepen.

Het was opmerkelijk dat Alonso het Lewis niet moeilijk kon maken, ook niet qua banden management.
