VeeKay 'tevreden' met elfde plaats na inhaalrace op Texas Motor Speedway

IndyCar-coureur Rinus ‘VeeKay’ van Kalmthout heeft de tweede race van het NTT IndyCar Series-seizoen met een elfde finishplaats afgesloten. Op het ovaalcircuit van Texas Motor Speedway startte de Nederlander vanaf de 26e startplaats, waarna hij zich naar een positie net buiten de top tien wist te werken. VeeKay laat weten ‘prima tevreden’ te zijn met het behaalde resultaat.

Afgelopen weekend vond op het Texas Motor Speedway de eerste ovaalrace van het IndyCar-seizoen van 2023 plaats. Rinus ‘VeeKay’ van Kalmthout begon de 250 ronden durende race vanaf de 26e startplaats, waarna hij zich vakbekwaam door het veld naar voren bewoog en tot een 21e positie kwam. Zijn vooruitzichten in de race werd na zijn eerste pitstop flink verbeterd, aangezien de balansaanpassingen een goed effect op zijn #21 BitNile Chevrolet-wagen hadden.

Ook de 2023-editie van de race op het Texas Motor Speedway was een spektakelstuk. Meerdere coureurs vlogen tijdens de race van de baan, waardoor de wedstrijd maar liefst vijfmaal moest worden geneutraliseerd. VeeKay bestuurde zijn auto van Ed Carpenter Racing echter ontwijkend langs alle obstakels, waar hij na een ontzettend goede tweede pitstop vlak bij de top tien terechtkwam. Na flink wat geschuif in posities rondom de top tien, kwam VeeKay uiteindelijk vanuit de elfde positie over de finishstreep.

"Gezien de startplaats ben ik prima tevreden met de elfde plaats", begint VeeKay. "De race verliep voortvarend, al was het chaotisch op de baan. Het voelde net alsof we met 28 auto's in een wasmachine reden, zo krap was het! Gedurende de complete race, van meer dan twee uren, was het geen moment saai. Er wat continu actie om me heen en ik ben prima tevreden met de uitkomst. Jammer dat het nét geen top tien is, maar op dit resultaat kunnen wij voortbouwen", concludeert de Hoofddorper.

"Waar sommige coureurs eenvoudig de hogere racelijn konden aanvallen, moest ik mijn wagen op de lagere lijn houden. We hadden simpelweg niet de balans om naar boven te gaan en zodoende was ik daar kwetsbaar. Gelukkig werkte de lagere lijn dusdanig goed, dat ik me desondanks een weg naar voren kon vechten. Vlak voor de laatste neutralisatie reed ik zij aan zij met Helio Castroneves, die uiteindelijk als tiende is gefinisht. Zonder die laatste gele vlag had er dus nog íets meer ingezeten."

"Tijdens mijn eerste stint merkte ik dat de wagen met enkele aanpassingen om betere posities zou kunnen strijden. Nadat we die doorvoerden, maakte ik veel terrein goed. Door gebruik van de vrije lucht te maken kon ik veel tijd goedmaken. We hebben gedurende de race op een juiste manier downforce weggehaald, waardoor ik steeds meer rechtelijnsnelheid kreeg. Dit biedt hoop voor de belangrijkste ovalrace van het jaar, de Indianapolis 500!", sluit VeeKay af.

Probleem is wel dat hij zichzelf met een te lang verblijf bij ECR uit de markt voor topteams kan prijzen.

Hopelijk krijgt Rinus na het aflopen van zijn contract bij ECR een contract bij een betere renstal ! Alles zal afhangen van het sponsorgeld dat hij meeneemt. Met ECR zu je nooit ver komen, een dag uitschieter daargelaten...

  @Captain H. M. Murdock ondanks je daar wel een punt hebt vrees ik dat er momenteel niets anders op zit. Ik heb het gevoel dat Rinus niet naar Andretti wil omdat het daar momenteel voor een top team nou niet echt geweldig gaat. Ik had het idee dat hij wou wachten op de top stoel van Penske, maar nu Power heeft bijgetekend zit dat er wellicht niet in. Misschien dat Ganassi of McLaren iets in hem zien, Rosenqvist en Palou zijn nog lang niet zeker van een langer verblijf bij hun teams.

  Ik weet het niet zeker hoor, maar had Rinus niet voor meerdere jaren bij ECR bijgetekend?

Prima race maar kon de snelheid van de top geen moment bijbenen. Dus ik denk maximaal haalbare met de setup/auto die hij had.

Ik denk wel dat we kunnen zeggen dat Rinus geen nieuwe Newgarden is van ECR. Newgarden is naa mijn mening de meest complete Amerikaanse coureur. Snapt het oval spelletje, snapt stratenraces en snapt roadcoarses... gisteren ook weer op t juiste moment aan de leiding.
