Opmerkelijke prestatie brengt Alonso in rijtje met Formule 1-legende Fangio

Dat Fernando Alonso lekker aan het Formule 1-seizoen 2023 is begonnen, is een understatement. De 41-jarige Spanjaard heeft voorlopig na iedere Grand Prix de gang naar het erepodium mogen maken. Dankzij drie achtereenvolgende derde plaatsen bezet de tweevoudig wereldkampioen momenteel - hoe kan het ook anders - de derde plaats in het wereldkampioenschap.

Vanwege zijn ongebruikelijk hoge leeftijd heeft Alonso in de afgelopen weken meermaals prestaties geëvenaard die lange tijd als onmogelijk werden beschouwd. Zo vaak gebeurt het immers niet, dat er een coureur van boven de veertig op het erepodium mag aansluiten - in de afgelopen drie decennia vond een dergelijke prestatie precies tweemaal plaats, namelijk tijdens de Europese Grand Prix van 2012 waarin een 43-jarige Michael Schumacher als derde over de meet reed en de Australische GP van 1994, die werd gewonnen door een destijds 41-jarige Nigel Mansell.

Dat een veertigplusser driemaal achtereenvolgens op het podium staat, is zeer ongebruikelijk. In de rijke, 73-jarige historie van de Formule 1 is het slechts een handvol keren voorgekomen. De allereerste wereldkampioen, Giuseppe Farina, kreeg het meermaals voor elkaar - Luigi Fagioli, met 53 jaar de oudste racewinnaar ooit, deed het ook eens. De laatste Formule 1-coureur voor Alonso die op een leeftijd van boven de veertig jaar driemaal achtereenvolgens naar het podium reed, was de Argentijnse racelegende Juan Manuel Fangio.

Vijfvoudig wereldkampioen Fangio won voor Maserati na een magistrale inhaaltocht de Duitse Grand Prix van 1957 op de Nordschleife, om direct daarna als tweede te finishen in zowel de Grand Prix van Pescara als de Italiaanse GP op Monza. Het leverde Fangio de benodigde punten op om met zijn vijfde en laatste wereldtitel aan de haal te gaan. Voor de wereldtitel moet Alonso nog ruim een half jaar flink doortrappen, maar met drie podiumfinishes is zijn seizoen in ieder geval op een zeer positieve manier begonnen.

Max heeft al enkele records in handen als 'de jongste ooit'. Misschien iets om daar een 'de oudst ooit' aan toe te voegen? Moet hij dus nog wel effe doortuffen voordat hij die ouwe Alonso heeft ingehaald.

Had spijtig genoeg telkens bij het verkeerde team geweest om nogmaals wk te worden.
Wat had deze man nog meer behaald indien het allemaal klopte? Zelfs bij Toyota mp was hij een kampioen 🏁
