Ricciardo eerlijk over geflopte McLaren-tijd: "Ik dacht dat ik het zou overwinnen"

Daniel Ricciardo fungeert dit jaar als de derde coureur van het team van Red Bull Racing. De Australiër nam deze rol aan nadat zijn contract bij McLaren eind vorig jaar werd ontbonden. Ricciardo is eerlijk genoeg om toe te geven dat hij zijn McLaren-tijd met de kennis van nu anders had moeten aanpakken.

Ricciardo reed twee seizoenen voor de Britse renstal. Bij McLaren werd hij twee jaar op rij verslagen door zijn jonge teamgenoot Lando Norris. Toch wist Ricciardo in die twee seizoenen in dienst van McLaren één race te winnen. In 2021 schreef hij de Italiaanse Grand Prix op het circuit van Monza op zijn naam, het was een spaarzaam hoogtepunt uit zijn McLaren-tijd.

Zwaktes

Vorig jaar werd bekend dat Ricciardo aan het einde van het seizoen zou gaan vertrekken. Bij zijn oude liefde Red Bull vond hij onderdak en is hij nu de derde coureur. In gesprek met Speedcafe kijkt hij terug op zijn McLaren-tijd: "Ik zal altijd als enige verantwoordelijkheid of aansprakelijkheid nemen. Ik geloofde jarenlang dat ik oprecht de beste ter wereld was, ik dacht dat ik het zou overwinnen. Bij McLaren was het duidelijk dat dit moeilijk was voor mij. Ik was mij ervan bewust dat ik niet de perfecte coureur was en dat ik zwaktes heb."

Spijt

In de afgelopen maanden kreeg Ricciardo de kans om eens goed te reflecteren op zijn tijd in dienst van McLaren. De Australische coureur is eerlijk: "Ik heb een beetje afstand kunnen nemen en nu ik erop terugkijk, zou ik dingen anders doen als ik die tijd had. Misschien had ik wel meer vragen moeten stellen of had ik iets veeleisender moeten zijn. Je leert echter van dit soort dingen dus ik kijk er niet met spijt op terug."

Recentelijk heb ik nog wat races uit de periode 2016 t/m 2018 gekeken en eigenlijk was Ricciardo in die periode behoorlijk goed. En ja... natuurlijk, Verstappen is nog beter. Maar wat Ricciardo die jaren liet zien was gewoon meer dan een dikke prima. Genoeg snelheid en veel leuke acties.

Dit team is afgegleden sinds mercedes een fabrieksteam is geworden. ik denk dat dat de reden is. en natuurlijk ook door de opkomst van red bull. er zit gewoon niet meer in, ze doen gewoon aardig mee,

  De kr8cht van herhaling moet je never nooit onderschatten, kijk maar naar dat fijne bestuurdersvolk in Den Haag die nycks anders doen dan dat.

Ook bij Renault was het echt zo slecht nog niet. Vooral het tweede jaar bij Renault was ontzettend goed met veel top 5 noteringen en Ocon die flink de oren werd gewassen.
De klad kwam er pas in bij McLaren. Ligt dat aan McLaren? Ligt dat aan Ricciardo? Ligt het aan beide omdat de waarheid vaak ergens in het midden ligt? Ik vind dat soort dingen altijd heel lastig om te bepalen.
Maar men zou voor de grap eens terug moeten kijken naar de Red Bull periode, of zelfs Renault periode. Het was gewoon allemaal best goed wat hij daar liet zien.

  Absoluut waar. Voor mijn gevoel had Verstappen er een hardere dobber aan om Ricciardo te verslaan in zijn eerste jaren bij RBR dan Sainz bij TR.
  Qua punten is Ricciardo volgens mij 2 van de 3 seizoenen boven Verstappen geëindigd maar die cijfers zeggen niet zoveel vanwege de vele uitvalbeurten vanwege de onbetrouwbare Renault motor, de eerste paar seizoenen vooral bij Verstappen en in 2018 volgens mij veel meer bij Ricciardo.
  
  Alles wat daarna kwam (inclusief Perez) deed het stukken minder dan hoe Ricciardo het deed. Bij RBR baalden ze ook stevig dat hij vrij plotseling vertrok.
