Ricciardo weet wat hij niet wil: "Niet ten koste van alles op de grid"

Daniel Ricciardo geniet momenteel van een jaar aan de zijlijn. De Australische coureur fungeert dit seizoen als derde coureur van Red Bull Racing en is maar aanwezig bij een handvol raceweekenden. In 2024 wil Ricciardo weer terugkeren op de grid, hij weet echter precies wat hij wil.

Ricciardo reed vorig seizoen in de Formule 1 voor het team van McLaren. Zijn prestaties vielen echter enorm tegen en zijn toenmalige teamgenoot Lando Norris was veel sneller. McLaren ondernam actie en ontbond Ricciardo's contract aan het einde van het seizoen. De Australiër kon ermee leven en geniet nu van zijn vrije dagen zonder de stress van een raceweekend.

Doel

Ricciardo blijft echter wel een autocoureur. Hij wil dan ook niets liever dan racen, maar hij is wel duidelijk over wat hij wel en niet wil doen. Hij heeft een duidelijk doel voor ogen en dat spreekt hij uit in gesprek met de Australische media: "Eén ding dat ik uit dit seizoen wil halen is dat ik wil weten wat ik precies wil, ik wil echter ook weten wat ik niet wil. Ik denk dat ik op die laatste vraag nu al antwoord kan geven."

Ricciardo barst van de ambities en dat betekent dat hij bij een comeback ook weer wil gaan strijden om de podiumplaatsen. Een stoeltje bij bijvoorbeeld het team van Haas voldoet dan ook niet aan zijn eisen. Ricciardo legt zijn plannen zeer duidelijk uit: "Ik wil niet terug gaan naar nul. Ik wil niet alleen meerijden om dan te vechten voor de achttiende plaats. Ik wil niet ten koste van alles op de grid staan."

  inderdaad, ik wordt een beetje moe van dit soort uitspraken, of je geeft alles, en dan ook 100% ten koste van (bijna) alles of je gaat maar wieberen had ik als teambaas gezegd, vooral als het om rijders gaat.

Als je jarenlang overwinningen en podia hebt geboekt, dan snap ik het wel, maar goed.. er zijn genoeg coureurs die er alles voor over hebben om wel bij Haas te rijden.

Alonso heeft jarenlang bij mindere teams gereden en dat betaald zich nu weer uit. Ik snap wel dat Ricciardo meteen weer voorin wil meerijden maar hij zal zich toch opnieuw moeten bewijzen bij een team. Kijk naar Hulkenberg nu, die zie ik door zijn huidige presentaties wel weer naar een beter team promoveren als er ergens een plek komt.

Ricciardo wil alleen terug naar een top team, dan zijn er drie mogelijkheden:

1. Ferrari: Het huidige duo rijders voldoet en heeft lopende contracten. Dus dit gaan het niet worden.
2. Red Bull: Verstappen gaat hij niet vervangen dus is het zitje van Perez de enige optie. O dit moment voldoet Perez (min of meer) aan de verwachtingen van het team. Een swap met Ricciardo zou alleen maar voor onrust zorgen, Perez heeft ook vrienden aan zijn zijde van de garage.
3. Mercedes: Hier ligt zijn kans, ik denk dat hij aast op het stoeltje van Hamilton. Die moet nog zijn contract verlengen en dat is tot nu toe niet gebeurd. Bovendien heeft Mercedes weinig achter de hand qua vervangers. En ongetwijfeld willen ze niet in dezelfde situatie terecht komen als toen Rosberg plotseling zijn stuurtje in de wilgen heeft gehangen.

Het zal dus afhangen van Hamilton of hij volgend jaar rijdt, ik vermoed dat we na de zomerpause meer zullen weten.
