Alonso wijst op WEC-successen: "Men denkt dat ik in een donkere tunnel zat"

Fernando Alonso kent dit jaar een zeer goede start van het seizoen. De Spaanse Aston Martin-coureur eindigde in de eerste drie Grands Prix driemaal al derde. Alonso strijdt voor het eerst in jaren mee om de podiumplekken en dat doet hem goed. Alonso merkt echter wel op dat hij in zijn WEC-periode ook voor de podiums kon strijden.

Alonso keerde in 2021 terug in de koningsklasse van de autosport. De Spaanse tweevoudig wereldkampioen tekende een contract bij zijn oude liefde Alpine, maar rijdt sinds dit jaar voor Aston Martin. Voorafgaand zijn comeback reed Alonso een paar seizoenen in andere klassen. Hij reed fulltime in het World Endurance Championship en nam tevens deel aan de Dakar Rally.

Donkere tunnel

Alonso geniet van zijn huidige successen in de Formule 1. Hij is het echter niet eens met de beweringen over zijn hernieuwde succes. Tegenover Motorsport.com deelt hij zijn mening hierover: "Het is niet zo lang geleden dat ik gewoon een realistische kans had op overwinningen. Ik weet dat veel mensen vaak denken dat ik jarenlang in een soort donkere tunnel zat, maar ik werd vier jaar geleden gewoon wereldkampioen in het WEC."

De Spaanse Aston Martin-coureur weet echter ook dat veel fans zich niet bewust zijn van dit feit. Alonso is zelf van mening dat zijn successen in het WEC wel van waarde zijn: "Ik weet dat het geen Formule 1 is, maar onze wereld draait niet alleen om die klasse. Er zijn veel mooie dingen in de autosport. Ik won en domineerde races in het WEC, dat was ook nog maar vier jaar geleden. In de afgelopen twee jaar duelleerde ik met Alpine om het podium. In Australië en Canada had ik zelfs kans op een pole position."

ik ben geen echte fan van hem ofzo, maar voor mij is hij wel de meest complete rijder van het veld, presteert eigenlijk altijd en overal, kon hem wel schieten in zijn jonge jaren, maar meer gaan waarderen in deze fase van zijn carriere

  Herkenbaar, ik vond het ook een vervelend mannetje toen hij jong was. Was wel onder de indruk toen hij in 2003 Schumacher op een ronde zette in Hongarije. Bij mij is het nu wel geheel omgedraaid, ik gun hem alles. Heeft het met McLaren en Ferrari geprobeerd tegen Red Bull, gooide een kampioenschap weg door zelf te crashen op Fuji in 2007. Valencia 2012 was prachtig en zijn 3e plaatsen dit seizoen zijn voor mij ronduit indrukwekkend. Hopelijk blijf hij nog ff, hij is er snel genoeg voor.

  Ik gun Alonso nu ook alles en bij Hamilton is het precies het omgedraaide gebeurt.

Ben zeker een fan van hem. Alonso is in een goede auto een killer. Hij heeft dat wat Leclerc een beetje mist.
