Steiner kijkt terug op Mazepin-rel: "Dat moesten we aan de hele wereld vertellen"

Het team van Haas bevond zich in de afgelopen jaren regelmatig in het middelpunt van de aandacht. De Amerikaanse renstal overleefde meerdere stormen en teambaas Günther Steiner kan er nu rustig op terugkijken. Steiner kan nu ook terugkijken op de situatie met Nikita Mazepin en hoofdsponsor Uralkali.

Haas bevond zich in een lastige situatie tijdens de eerste testweek in 2022. Tijdens de testweek in Barcelona viel Rusland buurland Oekraïne binnen en keek de gehele Formule 1-wereld naar Haas. Het team reed immers rond met een Russische hoofdsponsor en een Russische coureur in de persoon van Nikita Mazepin. Haas besloot de logo's van Uralkali te verwijderen en Mazepin moest uiteindelijk ook vertrekken bij het team.

Meeting

Haas-teambaas Günther Steiner bespreekt de situatie in zijn nieuwe boek 'Surviving to Drive'. Hij kijkt terug op de beslissing om de Russische contracten te verscheuren: "Zodra de test voorbij was ging ik naar mijn kantoor voor een meeting met de board. Ze wilden weten wat ik als teambaas dacht. Ik zei toen dat we de Uralkali-sponsoring moesten laten vallen. Ik zei dat we de livery wit moesten maken en dat aan de hele wereld moesten vertellen."

Uralkali

Steiner moest daarna het nieuws delen met de mensen van Uralkali. De Italiaanse teambaas geeft aan dat het zeker geen makkelijk situatie was: "Na de board meeting belde ik de voorzitter van Uralkali op en vertelde ik hem wat wij hadden besloten. Ik denk dat hij dit wel voelde aankomen. Ik had ook kunnen bellen met de vader van Nikita, maar elke keer als we elkaar spraken kregen we een woordenwisseling. Alhoewel het een unanieme beslissing was, vroeg ik de voorzitter van Uralkali was hij ervan vond. Ik heb nog steeds niet van hem gehoord."
