Ricciardo: Drukke bezetting F1-grid 'maakt mij niet bang'

Red Bull-reservecoureur Daniel Ricciardo meent maar al te goed te weten hoe lastig het kan zijn om in de toekomst naar de Formule 1-grid terug te keren. De achtvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar zegt ‘niet bang’ te zijn dat er weinig kansen zijn om een terugkeer naar de koningsklasse van de motorsport te kunnen maken.

Na twee tegenvallende jaren bij het Formule 1-team van McLaren, werd Daniel Ricciardo de deur gewezen. Een coureur die vooraf aan zijn periode bij het papajakleurige team bekend stond als eentje die het allerlaatst remt en alsnog de bocht wist te halen, is volgens een aantal stemmen in- en rondom de F1-paddock na zijn periode bij McLaren een uitgebluste Australiër die zijn comeback naar de topsport niet meer zal kunnen volbrengen.

Toch blijft Ricciardo standvastig over de situatie waar hij nu in verkeert. Volgens hem zit een terugkeer naar de koningsklasse er niet 'tegen alle kosten' in, wat betekent dat een aansluiting bij een topteam niet zomaar een realiteit kan worden. Ricciardo meent goed te weten hoe groot zijn kansen zijn om weer een fulltime F1-coureur te worden, en voegt eraan toe niet bang te zijn om een drukbezette grid voor 2024 te zien:

"Het maakt mij niet bang", begint de Australiër over de grote concurrentie voor het kunnen bemachtigen van een gewild F1-stoeltje. "Zo is het altijd al geweest. Ik wist dat ik een risico zou nemen door mezelf niet van een zitje te verzekeren. Maar ik denk dat het nu duidelijk is wat ik niet wil. Wat ik niet wil, is gewoon zomaar een plaats binnen de Formule 1 hebben. Ik wil niet vanaf nul starten, en in zekere zin mijn carrière opnieuw opbouwen."

"En ik bedoel dat niet arrogant, maar dat is niet aan mij besteed. Ik denk niet dat dat mij de stimulatie zal geven die ik zoek. Dus dat maakt een stoeltje bij een topteam nóg schaarser. Maar ik weet dat ik daar op mijn best zou kunnen presteren", meent Ricciardo.

Het lijkt erop dat Ricciardo al meer helderheid heeft gevonden, maar toch blijft het nog afwachten of de honger naar een fulltime stoeltje hem nog zou kunnen verleiden om ook genoegen met een plek in een lager team te nemen: "In mijn eerste dag terug bij Red Bull heb ik het meeste plezier ooit gehad in een simulator. Dat is bijzonder, want normaal gesproken is dat juist geen zak aan."

"Maar Simon (Rennie), mijn ingenieur toentertijd bij Red Bull, die managet de simulator. Het was alsof we terug in de routine van 2018 zaten, en ik zeg het je, ik heb ervan genoten. Het duurde me een paar ronden om weer te wennen, maar toen ik zover was, kwam alles weer terug. Ik kan eerlijk zeggen dat mijn zelfvertrouwen in die ene dag van best laag weer terug naar het oude niveau gestegen is", sluit Ricciardo af.

Bij Renol was redt het een drama dit seizoen en dat weet Danny ook wel. Bij Alpine ligt dus een kans.

Sowieso verdient hij nog wel een plekje op de grid als je kijkt naar de Vries wat hij er van bakt.

  Denk dat je pas na een half seizoen moet kijken wat dan de krachtsverhoudingen zijn.
  
  In tegenstelling tot wat velen denken is Tsunoda geen pannenkoek, en kan je niet verwachten dat de Vries hem zo maar even om de oortjes rijdt.

  Maar Danny zal evengoed het zitje van Bottas over gaan nemen als die kans zich voordoet. Hij probeert zich gewoon weer te positioneren als hongerig en gretig en bereidwillig.
  En zoals OrangeArrows terecht opmerkt; De Vries is weer eens ouderwets aan het klootviolen en ligt er volgend seizoen weer uit. Ook daar liggen kansen.
  Belangrijk zal zijn dat Daniël weer geloof en motivatie vindt, als dat zo is hoort hij gewoon in de top 8 van het veld en zal waarschijnlijk wel een zitje vinden.
  Denk persoonlijk dat het geen fabrieksteam wordt maar maakt dat echt uit?

  De verwachtingen werden enorm opgepompt na Imola vorig jaar. Onrealistisch. De F1 is andere koek dan de FE en hij moet gewoon de tijd krijgen.
