Stroll: "Bakoe is locatie waar ik goede herinneringen aan heb"

Lance Stroll had het wel naar zijn zin met vier weken zonder een Grand Prix, maar toch bleef het racen voor de Aston Martin-coureur een vorm van gemis. De Canadees kijkt daarom erg vooruit naar aankomend weekend in Bakoe, de plek waar Stroll zijn eerste grote succes boekte.

"Het was goed om een korte pauze te hebben na een paar drukke races, maar niets is te vergelijken met racen en gezien de sterke start van het seizoen kan ik niet wachten om weer te gaan rijden", begon de Canadees vol goede moed.

Zes jaar terug pakte Stroll zijn eerste eremetaal in Azerbeidzjan in een knotsgekke wedstrijd vol plotwendingen. In de laatste ronde reed de Canadees nog op P2 totdat Mercedes-coureur Valtteri Bottas in de laatste meter hem nog voorbij stak. Daniel Ricciardo won uit geslagen positie de race.

Met de huidige Aston Martin zijn podiumplaatsen zeker reëel, getuige de drie derde plekken van teamgenoot Fernando Alonso. "Bakoe is een locatie waar ik goede herinneringen aan heb - ik behaalde mijn eerste podium in de Formule 1 in 2017 - en we gaan dit weekend er naar toe in de hoop onze vorm van het vroege seizoen voort te zetten. Over het algemeen is het een uitdagende race, een heel leuk circuit."

De indeling van het GP-weekend is anders dan anders met een nieuwe kwalificatie voor de Sprint Race. "We zullen dit weekend ook de eerste sprint van het jaar hebben en met een ander nieuw format, waarvan ik denk dat het geweldig zal zijn voor de fans. We moeten een vliegende start maken, want er zal weinig tijd zijn om ons voor te bereiden op de kwalificatie en de races", doelt Stroll op een vrije training.

"Maar het team heeft fantastisch werk geleverd dit jaar, dus ik weet dat we klaar zijn voor de uitdaging.", sloot de Aston Martin-coureur af.
