Leclerc had pole niet zien aankomen: "Mooie verrassing"

Charles Leclerc heeft vandaag vriend en vijand verrast met de pole position. De Ferrari oogde al snel in de eerste vrije training in Azerbeidzjan en bewees die snelheid in de kwalificatie van zojuist. Leclerc was zeer blij met zijn prestatie en had de pole position zelf ook niet zien aankomen.

Leclerc begon snel aan de kwalificatie en leek dan ook een outsider te worden voor een goed resultaat in Bakoe. De Monegask was in de eerste run in Q3 even snel als Max Verstappen waardoor de fans werden beloond op een sterk kwalificatieduel. Uiteindelijk trok Leclerc in de tweede run aan het langste eind en greep hij zijn eerste pole van het jaar.

Verrassing

Leclerc sprong na afloop in de armen van zijn monteurs en de opluchting was zichtbaar bij de werknemers van de Italiaanse renstal. De Monegask sprak zich na afloop uit bij interviewer van dienst Mark Webber: "Ik ben zeker verrast. We benaderde dit weekend met de gedachte dat het mooi zou zijn als we sneller zouden zijn dan Aston Martin en Mercedes in de kwalificatie. Het is een mooie verrassing, maar we moeten niet vergeten dat Red Bull sneller zal zijn in de race."

Lastig

Leclerc start zondag in de Grand Prix van de best mogelijke startplek en dat zorgt ervoor dat hij mag hopen op een enigszins verrassende zege. De Monegask tempert die verwachtingen echter: "Het gaat lastig worden om de leiding vast te houden, maar ik ben wel heel erg blij met mijn rondje. Het gevoel met de auto was van begin tot eind heel erg goed. Morgen wordt een uitdaging want we hebben nog niet gereden met de mediums, maar de pace ziet er goed uit."

Goed bezig Charles. Ik ben benieuwd naar de race pace. Hopelijk is de wagen dit keer zuiniger voor de banden.

Leclerc heeft zijn momenten waarop hij zijn klasse laat zien. Vandaag is zo'n dag en alle lof gaat naar hem toe. Het lek bij ferrari is niet boven maar Leclerc is boven zichzelf uitgestegen.

  Dit laat hij wel vaker zien in de kwalificatie, deze baan ligt hem kennelijk ook heel goed.
  Als je het vertrouwen hebt in de auto, dan lukt het hem ook vaak iets speciaals te laten zien.
  Alle credits voor Charles. Sainz had duidelijk het vertrouwen niet, en dan zie je het verschil.
  Zondag zal het een stuk lastiger worden om de Redbull achter zich te houden.

  vandaag zonder twijfel de beste. Mooi dat ie weer een teken van leven geeft en niet de kop laat hangen. Hij zat er in Bahrein natuurlijk ook al best goed bij. Morgen nog zo'n sessie, heerlijk!

  'Ik weet het niet. Ik hou gewoon van stadscircuits in het algemeen', zo antwoordt Leclerc op de vraag waarom hij zo goed is in Baku.
  'Hier, Singapore en Monaco zijn circuits waar ik echt van geniet. Je kan meer spelen met de limieten dan op een normaal circuit. De limiet is moeilijk, omdat het de muur is.
  Dus, het bouwt op om dicht bij de muur te zijn zonder het te raken. Het ging goed in de laatste drie jaar', zo doelt hij op het feit dat hij zijn derde pole op rij wist te pakken in Baku.
  
  Met op de zaterdag nog een kwalificatie in het verschiet, hoopt de Monegask ook zijn vierde poleposition op rij te pakken in Azerbeidzjan.
  'Morgen hebben we weer een kwalificatie, hopelijk wordt het vier poles op rij, daarna volgen de races, die veel belangrijker zullen zijn. Ik denk dat we dan wat meer moeite zullen hebben omdat ik denk dat Red Bull een stapje voor ligt', zo verwacht hij in de race de Oostenrijkse renstal niet voor te kunnen blijven.
  
  Op de limiet
  Voor Baku heeft het team geen nieuwe onderdelen gebracht, en dus is het vooral de set-up die gewoon klopt voor Leclerc.
  'We hebben geen nieuwe onderdelen aan de wagen. We hebben enkel een achtervleugel die aangepast is aan dit circuit. Maar ik denk dat we goed werk hebben verricht met de set-up sinds Australië.
  Hoeveel beter is het dan? Dat zullen we zondag zien. We zullen het nu niet weten, pas zondag. Ik kan zeggen dat vandaag de ronde op de limiet was en wat ik wilde doen heb ik gedaan.'
