Wolff ziet kansjes: "Marges achter de top drie zijn klein"

Het team van Mercedes kende een zeer wisselvallige kwalificatie op het stratencircuit in Bakoe. Lewis Hamilton reed de vijfde tijd terwijl George Russell niet eens het derde kwalificatiedeel wist te bereiken. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff geeft toe dat zijn team momenteel een flinke achterstand heeft op de concurrentie.

Mercedes reisde met een goed gevoel af naar Azerbeidzjan. De Duitse renstal kende vier weken terug in Australië een goede race en dat zorgde voor hoge verwachtingen. In de kwalificatie werd echter duidelijk dat Red Bull Racing en Ferrari nog te snel zijn. Russells elfde tijd was een grote teleurstelling en men hoopt dan ook snel op een verbetering.

Kleine marges

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff krabbelde zich na afloop eventjes achter zijn oren. De Oostenrijker ziet dat de verschillen klein zijn en spreekt zich uit bij Sky Sports: "De tijden zijn verwarrend maar we hebben het wel echt moeilijk. De marges achter de top drie zijn zo klein dus we moeten het allerbeste eruit halen. We verliezen tijd in drie bochten. We zijn bijna even snel als Max en Charles in de eerste twee bochten en aan het einde van de ronde. In de middelste sector is Ferrari echt buitengewoon goed."

Wolff gaat ervanuit dat Mercedes dit weekend moet overleven in de straten van Bakoe. De Oostenrijker wijst naar een groot verschil met zijn renstal en de concurrentie. Wolff: "Ik denk dat we in een goed window zitten, maar de auto is over het algemeen te instabiel voor onze coureurs. We hebben geen updatepakket meegenomen, die komt pas in Imola. We moeten dus kijken wat we hier mee kunnen doen."

  Ik denk dat Mercedes blij gaat zijn als ze punten pakken deze race.
  Mercedes einde van het jaar als 3e in de constructeurs zou al een wonder zijn, maar ik gok eerder dat de gaan vechten om plek 4 en 5

Het wil maar niet bij Toto doordringen dat hij al een tijdje teambaas is van een tobteam, die heeft gewoon een plaat voor z'n kop van hier tot guenther!

  Over plaat voor het hoofd gesproken.
  8 jaar achter elkaar wk kun je volgens mijn over een topteams spreken, dat nu door een verkeerd concept in een dip zit en maar goed ook voor de afwisseling.
