Yuki leeft mee met De Vries: ''Het is jammer hoe het voor hem eindigde''

De vrijdagmorgen in Azerbeidzjan zag het niet echt rooskleurig uit voor Yuki Tsunoda na zijn crash in de muur tijdens VT1. De AlphaTauri-coureur herpakte zich direct in de kwalificatie omdanks weinig oefentijd en zette zijn AT04 op de achtste positie.

Tsunoda kon niks anders dan lof uiten aan zijn eigen renstal. "Allereerst heeft het hele team geweldig werk geleverd. Onze zwakte was lineaire snelheid en iedereen in Bicester heeft hard gewerkt om upgrades te brengen om ons competatiever te maken, dus ik ben tevreden met het resultaat en enthousiast over de toekomst."

Zijn teamgenoot Nyck de Vries bewandelde de omgekeerde weg en knalde zichzelf letterlijk uit de competitie en moet achteraan starten. Tsunoda stak de Nederlander een hart onder de riem.

"Het is jammer hoe de kwalificatie voor Nyck eindigde, want hij zag er sterk uit tijdens VT1, maar ik ben blij dat hij in orde is. Als ik naar mijn kwalificatie kijk, ben ik blij dat ik de prestaties van de auto heb kunnen maximaliseren en opgelucht ben met mijn eerste P8 van het jaar."

Voor de Grand Prix in Bakoe bracht AlphaTauri updates mee om snelheid te vinden. Volgens de 22-jarige coureur is dat aardig gelukt vooralsnog. "Het is een stap in de goede richting en punten kunnen dit weekend mogelijk zijn, dus we zullen blijven werken om nog meer prestaties te vinden, zodat we punten kunnen pakken tijdens de sprintrace van morgen en de race op zondag."

  Vaak wel, maar Yuki gaf onlangs aan dat hij en Nyck heel erg goed met elkaar op kunnen schieten en daar heel blij om is. Ik denk dat hij deze lieve woorden gewoon oprecht meent.

  Nyck is gewoon in zijn eigen valkuil gestapt.
  Dat was eerdere jaren ook vaak zo.
  Hij gaf zelf, voor aanvang van het seizoen, nog aan dat zijn valkuil is dat hij teveel overdenkt. Zodra dat gebeurt vallen zijn prestaties weg en zit hij te rommelen. Hoevaak hebben we dat in zijn carrière al niet zien gebeuren. Hij weet het zelf ook.
  Zijn invalbeurt op Monza ging geweldig en dat was gewoon omdat er geen tijd was en Nyck direct moest instappen en presteren. Dan rijdt hij op gevoel en talent is gewoon super goed.
  Hij moet het overdenken los gaan laten en gewoon op gevoel en talent gaan rijden dan komt het wel goed.
  Helaas zien we bij Nyck vaak dat hij een heel seizoen kan blijven rommelen en dan pas in het tweede of derde seizoen vrij kan rijden. Dan wordt hij vrijwel altijd ook meteen kampioen.
  De vraag is of AT hem die tijd gaat geven. Time to grow up Nyck en tijd om te presteren. Laat je demonen gaan en ga gewoon rijden.
